R700 vs.....

This might be a done question but I have to ask it anyways...

Why do so many people have Remington rifles and talk smack about all other rifle manufactures? Especially when all I ever hear or read about is how you have take a R700 apart and spend more money on fixing the action/ barrel than the original rifle cost. I own a few of every manufacture so I'm not biased either way, just curious.

R700 is the most popular (most sold) rifle in the world. There are more accessories, stocks, information, and expertise available for remington and clones than any other rifle around. the remington design is the most copied design as well. Custom actions are often just copies of remington or copies with slight changes. This gives the advantage that the high quality clone can use all the equipment etc made for Remington 700.

I hear just the opposite of what you say, Remington owners are more often defending themselves from those who dump on Remington quality. remington has made multi millions of rifles. there have been a few bad ones, lots of mistreated ones, and lots of misinformation. It seems that one story of a bad remington will get 1000 people retelling that story on the internet, often like it happened to them.

Bad stories about custom actions are generally not repeated or if they are, and I have some to tell, the action maker is not identified. Truth is, when a custom action manufacture has only made a few 1000 actions, and they have 1 defect, their defect rate is higher than remington. Now that said, for 3x the price you do get better fit and finish, more accurate machining, and better extraction. If you can afford it, go for it. But the truth is you get 95% of the quality for 30% of the price buying a Remington 700. Remington doesn't deserve the bad rap people give it. I build all my personal rifles on R700, i enjoy it. I tune them up minimally. Never a need to recut the threads. I do like to upgrade the bolt.

So everyone has an opinion...you know what the say about opinions. I'm fine with those who prefer better actions. I built a lot of rifles on custom actions and I always appreciate the workmanship. But for the average joe, you can't beat R700.

Exactly. And IMO, this applies to a lot of products in our industry, not just actions.

Me too! This is why I build rifles on all sorts of unconventional action choices, for myself, at least. WH

Well said. This is why I make all my personal rifles on Remington (when I can). and I'll repeat, I do appreciate the quality in a custom action. --jerry

The most amazing thing about Remingtons to me (especially with consumer bias) is that in the National Match course shooting with a match rifle (bolt rifle) in the 1960's, 70's, 80's and into the 90's, Remington 700 actions were considered "sub-standard" to the Winchester 70 action (with the flat bottom versus round bottom). Limited few shot the 700 (I was one) and those that did, were kinda poo-paudded as being short of being competitive. I think this fraternity was the only one's to think otherwise. My 40X free-rifle was thought of as being one of the most accurate rifles in the world at the time by the person who gave it to me. It may have had roots back to the MTU days of lore in the 300 meter shooting.

I have a Remington 700 at the gunsmith getting trued up and the normal work, I was just curious what other peoples opinions are. I'm just a gun lover in general and don't have a preferred brand, I own Remington, Savage, Howa, Browning, and Winchester rifles.

Is a Remington 700 action that is trued in same league as some of the aftermarket receivers? If you start a build from scratch and buy everything would you buy a Remington or buy a aftermarket receiver?

Yes if the right guy true's it. If you already had the action maybe worth it. If you ever resale it's still a Rem action.
From scratch no question aftermarket.

The first custom rifle I had built I had planed to buy a Lawton action for it. Went to my gunsmith and talked to him about what I wanted. When we started talking about actions he told me he would buy a 700 action and that he would work it to the point that as far as shooting it would be on line with the custom. To save the money and put it on a scope.
I now have 4 custom rifles built on the 700 actions. 300 wm, 270 wby, 308, and a new 6mm cm.
They all shoot better than I can . And my shooting buddy has 3 and is building a new one as I write this.

They can shoot just as good but will never work like a custom or agg like one. And when i say they wont agg like one you cant shoot one fast like a custom so in a timed event they wont be competitive where wind and shifty mirage is a factor
