BEAM SCALES

but not by the guy throwing 1/2 gr variations
been there tested and documented.
guy with a .4 +/- was in the top 20
guy with a .2 +/- was in the top 10
guys with chargemasters at .1 +/- were the winners

yes they throw sloppy and someone wins but not the sloppy guys.

That's why I bought a chargemaster and 12V battery then made the appropriate pigtail connections.

I use an Ohaus 10-10 that was tuned by Scot Parker. It is smooth as silk and absolutely reliable. It is a pleasure to use. I especially like the micrometer.

I wouldn't know, he's had (3) of mine and my money for a very long time. Last time I talked to him he was trying to get them zeroed the same. I emailed him a while ago and have yet to get a response.

I understand he has a day job but was hoping to have them back quite a while ago. Scales were shipped to him 10/18/2016

Man, I thought the 4 months I have been waiting was a long time.

My scale is getting ready for a anniversary at Scott's house. Sent it to him mid March last year....he told me he had about a months worth of work when I sent it to him.....

sounds familiar. i like his work, but he needs to be more upfront to the customers about a realistic time frame for completion.

i am using a SP tuned Lyman M5. came from him working better, but after i followed advise from a well known contributor her on the forum to clean the knife edges and pivot point well and then burnish the knife edges with pencil lead, it took the scale to another level in sensitivity and repeat-ability.

when loading match ammo, i throw a charge from an RCBS manual thrower, trickle to the correct amount on the Lyman with an electric trickler, and then confirm the charge on a Grizzly Bald Eagle electronic scale. i keep another pan on the Grizzly and tare it each time before checking the charge on it. frankly, the Lyman is so good as configured, that i don't use the Grizzly when loading non match ammo. the Grizzly is just for piece of mind from a major screw up on my part

I emailed him yesterday about tuning-up a Redding No. 2; I received a prompt reply stating the charge to include return shipping would be $185 and he was several weeks behind. From what I'm reading here, in reference to the lead-times, I probably won't be sending my scale.

You stated, you followed the advise from someone on the forum to service your scales. Is there an article or post containing pictures on how to do this?

Yea, he answers emails until he gets your money and then it’s crickets. If I don’t hear something this week I’m going to send a certified letter requesting my scale or my money back. If that doesn’t work I’ll try filing a report with his local police department.

not that i am aware of. my description below repeats what i read on the other post.

remove the beam from the scale turn it upside down, and use some rubbing alcohol to GENTLY clean the knife edge pivots. also clean in the area on the scale where the knife edges sit. gently blow everything dry and with some mechanical pencil lead, gently brush across the knife edges at their sharpest point and a little along the sides. don't coat these parts with the lead, just burnish them.

reinstall carefully. on the Parker tuned scale, i found this increased the scales sensitivity and repeatabilty. about once a month i repeat this procedure.

caveat, i have never tried this on a non Parker tuned scale so i don't know if it helps with those or not. i got a cheap chinese RCBS laying around. i will have to try it on that.

I have a Lyman M5 I was intending to send to Scott, this thread is not doing my confidence any good in the path I wanted to go. Anybody have his email, I’d like to email him. I wonder if he is even aware of the bad feedback taking place on this thread.

It’s sounds like he knows what he’s doing but lacks in the communication Dept.

If you do a search up at the top right hand corner of this web page for scale tuning there are tons of posts regarding that.

I'm using a RCBS Charge-Master 1500 & checking & trickling up with an old Accu-Lab (Denver Instruments) Electronic scale (0.001 gr. resolution) that has line filtering & surge protection on the A.C. input. And I cross check it from time to time with a 10-10 and calibration weights.
I've found that a consistent temperature is important for my digital, otherwise it drifts.

I’m aware now! I don’t consider it bad feedback. My communication is not good. I realize this and am taking steps to improve. I’m also relearning how to gage time. Without going into names and dates, trust me when I say I’ve had some folks’ scales for way longer than is warranted.

I also have had the experience where one guy sends me a beautiful scale and I knock it out in 30 minutes. Another scale from a different customer I spend the better part of two hours with it before I determine I have to replace a beam. Or, I spend an hour cleaning it before I can make it right. This is not in defense of what is admittedly poor customer service. I offer it as explanation as to the learning curve I have faced and still figuring out in regards to the business side of the part time side business that is my hobby of making scales sing. I need two of me at present. So, I have decided to follow some sane advice from someone who’s been in my shoes. I’m now starting a waiting list. I will not be taking new orders or new work for a few months until I get caught up.

For those of you who have been waiting for some time, I’ll get it done right and back to you as quickly as I can. I thank you for you patience and forbearance through this.
