BEAM SCALES

I have an opinion o_O If you don't have a electronic friendly environment for a digital fangled scale with all the surge dampening gizmos and a designated area you may want to get a tuned 10-10 Ohaus or another scale tuned by Scott Parker..

I've seen several 505's for sale in fb reloading groups.
I have a gem pro 250. It may be .oo4 in either direction. I found a 1010 for 60.oo. It will change with half a piece of varget ... that's around oo2. I use then in conjunction allot.

For rifle, though not as fast, I use the Chargemaster Lite. BUT I check the weights with an M5 Ohaus and the RCBS 750 digital. Between the three, I'm good to go. (I only check every tenth load after they all get warmed up, which is about a half hour of on time.)

toss the 750..the beam is better if used correctly and kept clean.
the 750 moves in 0.1 steps...you seldom know a true weight.

Yep, but it's only as a third check reference. If the CM Lite says 21.4, and the beam says 21.4 and the 750 says 21.4 I feel confident that it is 21.4.

I have 2 digital scales which work very well but for short range work it isnt even necessary. I had Parker do my 5-10 rcbs(ohaus) scale and it is so sensitive one kernal of stick powder moves the beam so I use a little dany trickler and the beam scale not and my digitals collect dust.

I used a RCBS 505 made by Ohas for 25 years. I switched to a RCBS Charge master 1500. The two measuring the same tray of powder reflected a 2.4 grain difference. The Charge master 1500 showed the lighter amount. I have checked the Charge Master against a second Charge Master they measured the same tray the same weight.

A Parker tuned beam scale is as accurate as the best digital.

I wouldn't know, he's had (3) of mine and my money for a very long time. Last time I talked to him he was trying to get them zeroed the same. I emailed him a while ago and have yet to get a response.

I understand he has a day job but was hoping to have them back quite a while ago. Scales were shipped to him 10/18/2016

Started with a 5-10, tried some cheap electronic (gave them away) and then finally found a Ohaus Dial-a-Grain. Love it. Tested better than a RCBS 1500 Chargemaster.

I like both electronic and beam.
I bought a scale and had it sent straight to Scott Parker last May. I understand he's the best, so I wait. I've dropped a few msgs, no response. He is a busy man.

Have a pair of dial-o-grains in use for years and have yet to find any electronic as reliable.

I won't comment on brands. I check mine every so often. It gets checked along with our scientific scales at work at least once a year, guy does it for free as he is a rifle loonie also.
The very biggest issue with scales is being level. I have seen scales set up in some of the silliest ways.
As to the comments on how precise they are to a specific load. What one weighs and comes up with may really differ from the next guy. Put a dozen scale side by side you may well get a dozen different readings, of the minute amounts.
If one kernal of powder is going to show in my group, I probably would not be typing here, lol. If it was going to lock my action up, most would decide something was possibly dangerous.

I’ve only been reloading for a couple of years now and have been using the Chinese made RCBS 5-0-5 that came in a reloading kit. It recently became unrepeatable which caused me to do much research. The bottom line for me was that I do not reload enough to justify the purchase of a high quality electronic scale.

After deciding to stick with a beam scale, I picked up an old Redding #1 from the classifieds and also ordered a tuned scale from Scott Parker. The Redding scale is working great for now and hopefully I receive the S Parker scale in a timely manner. As of now it’s only a few weeks overdue. I did my research and took a calculated risk on the Parker scale.

A friend of mine sent his scale back to RCBS for a re-build/re-furbish and when he got it back it was from Ohaus. I bought a Dillon (balance) last year and it's as good or better than my old RCBS was when it was new. I still use the RCBS to verify my readings no matter what scale I happen to be using. I have a Redding #2 that will soon appear in the classifieds, that I was using until I got the Dillon.

The long range shooters that I know don't use a scale - they just fill up the case to the neck and seat the bullet.

but not by the guy throwing 1/2 gr variations
been there tested and documented.
guy with a .4 +/- was in the top 20
guy with a .2 +/- was in the top 10
guys with chargemasters at .1 +/- were the winners

yes they throw sloppy and someone wins but not the sloppy guys.

The SR Benchrest group crowd didn't get that memo. Many still throw powder charges, but it doesn't prevent sub .2" aggs from being shot.
