Long Range Rabbit Rifle.

Curious about where you live. Nothing on the profile page to explain parts of your dilemma related to components and availability. That info. might be useful to those inclined to offer their opinions.

Rabbits??? What kind of rabbits? I mean there are cottontails, jackrabbits and something else somewhere else. You need to explain more.
You can't say too much about where you live or someone might try to rob all of your guns. The rabbit I am shooting is the Common Rabbit, common in Europe. Where I live there is now a restriction on powder so all of the IMR powders are going to become unavailable and possibly the rest of the US. made powders. The .223 is cheap to run because it is a military caliber, the brass is the cheapest available. The .22 Hornet Rifle I was thinking of buying has now gone. It was up for sale for £75, but I think they gave it away in the end to a valued customer. I think I was a little excessive on the range I was wanting to shoot at, so maybe 100 yards with be more realistic with a night vision/thermal imagining scope,
with a more extended range in the daylight. My .22 rimfire Brno is efficient at 100 yards in daylight as you all know, but given low wind conditions. I think I will rest a while on this subject as I am still trying to find time to pillar bed my Brno 2E into a Boyds thumbhole stock I was lucky to acquire, they don't export them anymore. This rifle is already fitted with a Timney trigger. The biggest problem I have got is too open out the two action screw holes in the stock to accept 12mm pillars which I intend to make myself out of aluminium, given the time.

Yes, I must say I really fancy the .17 Hornet or a .22 K Hornet. The thing is with retirement coming up rapidly and the way that firearms loose value in this neck of the woods, neither would be a good investment money wise. The other thing that bothers me about this photo is what damage did the shock of the poor bunny loosing it's head, cause to the rest of the carcass, with regard to blood shot meat. How far down the carcass did the bruising travel? The idea is to be able to sell the carcass, and it's very uneconomical to have to skin a cold rabbit yourself. But they have to be gutted ASAP, when you have finished shooting for the day/night.

Only the top of the neck was lost. I shoulda posted a skinned pitcher as well.. Turned that wabbit into smoked wabbit the next day..

I dress mine as soon as I kill it, which is immediately..Then into a zip-lock bag and the back of the truck. It is cold enough here to keep em til I get home. I too am retired but I don't buy guns as an investment.

OK, I actually do not like the taste of rabbit myself and will probably try to exchange some of the shot rabbits I hope to eventually shoot for venison. The thing is with buying a rifle in this country is that you immediately loose a large portion of the value immediately. For example I have a .243 CZ 550 which was giving me bad groups, so I have 'glass bedded' it myself. The local gun dealer told me to 'throw away' the CZ and buy a Tikka from him. He didn't want the CZ in part exchange.

That’s crazy!! I would love to have that CZ 550. Just curious but do you know what causes the lack of value on used guns?

Sounds to me like the dealer is trying to screw him.. I don't know where you live WarpToad but can you sell to a private individual?? FWIW I have a CZ 550 in 243.. Mine shoots well but it has become a safe queen.

In my country it is not easy to own a rifle, you have to go to the police to obtain a certificate for both shotgun and firearm IE. rifle. You have to have a reason for owning them also. Gun dealers in this country always give poor exchange value's on firearms but charge a lot for them. For instance I was offered £30 for my .22 rimfire CZ auto against an 40 ft/lb precharged air rifle. I didn't sell it but kept the CZ and bought the air rifle for cash. The reason they say is that it is not easy to sell a secondhand rifle especially a .22 rimfire auto. The local dealer says the best fullbore rifle to buy is a Tikka, because they have a strong following in this country.
By the way I didn't do a very good job on 'glass bedding' the CZ 550 cosmetically wise, although it is now more accurate. It was the first time I had done 'glass bedding' and couldn't get enough information on the net about doing it. CZ 550's are different to other rifle actions, because the front action screw screws into the recoil lug. Still it wasn't worth anything anyhow so it doesn't matter that much apart from the cosmetic angle.
I can sell a rifle to an individual in this country providing he has authorization on is Firearm Certificate to purchase a rifle of that caliber. But this could take a couple of months to obtain, if you don't already have it. I think it would be a lot more hassle to sell a firearm to someone in say the USA. I actually have a Mk1 Ruger 77 in 30.06 caliber that I was thinking of maybe getting rid of because the recoil bothers me more than it used to do. It is well looked after for a rifle of that age,is accurate and has never been modified in any way, no need. It has about 2/3 of its barrel life left, but the local dealer would not buy it off me at any price.

I understand about the CZ glass bedding I have done a few of mine... My 550 is bedded and pillars installed.. I am very thankful to live where I do not have those restrictions on my fire arms..

Savage model 25T .22 hornet. 35 grain v-max13.0 grains Lil Gun. Mine shoots well. Killed several things past 185 yards. Coyote, ground hog, and my favorite was a fox squirrel at 205yds off of a head stone in a grave yard.
