LA 700 bolt click-no trigger

Like it says, having bolt click on action/bolt closing, no trigger, no round in chamber, when the bolt rotates, the firing pin sear clicks over the hump(observed) and clicks. Have rounded hump, but to no avail. Its like there is too much clearance on the sides of the sear, and the firing pin rotates and clicks. Any input?

Have you done any work to the rifle. For example replacing the trigger, this could be caused if the new trigger has a clearance issue with the stock or is binding.

Action is on the bench, without stock on. Looking through the trigger cutout in receiver, slowly turning the bolt, watching the firing pin sear (cocking piece)ride the cocking ramp, you can see it shift from one side to the other causing the click. It has a fluted firing pin when brought in. I've ordered a standard from PTG. It may or may not do anything, but I'm about at my wits end.

It sounds as though the trigger is bound up. Have you tried removing the trigger and then resetting it? I would be concerned that the pins holding the trigger in place are causing it to bind up.

without trigger installed, it clicks. Barrelled action only. Without firing pin assembly installed, bolt rotates as it should, drops just fine, no obstruction, no resistance, it is when firing pin assembly is installed that it clicks, and has resistance to close, until after the click, then drops as it should.

Dusty- that is what I was thinking, but I just wanted to here it from someone else. Installed a new cocking piece, new shroud(wider cocking piece). Still on the bench(barreled action only). Click is less noticeable without trigger, but didn't do anything for bolt closure with trigger installed.

The trigger housing supports the cocking piece. Withe no trigger in place, it's going to click. Put the trigger in, even without the sear, and you will note a reduction in the click. There is, out of necessity, some clearance so it will still click a little but not so much. WH

Perfectly normal when you dont have the trigger installed. During the first part of rotation your pushing the cocking piece over the bump as it climbs out of the detent notch, then as it clears the crest and starts down it pulls itself forward as it starts to ride the ramp down. Its that transferring of force thats causing the click. What made you decide this was a problem? While the shroud in theory is suppose to guide the cocking piece, in few very actions does this actually occur and none are Remingtons. Shrouds have to be fit very tightly for them to take control of the cocking piece.

Yep!

No one has conquered the problem. Many good suggestions. Tried them all. I have in the past made many Remington actions smooth as silk, but this one is a real puzzle. Something out of spec?, on the receiver itself or possibly the bolt. All I have on hand are short actions. Except for a 721, which the bolt will not enter a 700. It is a hard bolt throw at about thirty degree throw, then the click, and smooth from there down. Trigger sear engagement is immediate, no cock on close.

With the bolt closed, how much clearance in the front and rear of the bolt handle in the receiver notch?

Yesterday, removed and reattached bolt handle now at .007" clearance in the front of bolt handle. Didn't help one bit. Wasn't too bad to begin with, but thought I would try, primary extraction is now very good.
