Giraud Trimmer

How well do you like your Giraud trimmer? I got one on the way. Wondering how you guys get your first case trim length set up very close to the last trim after changing different caliber case holders and blades?

Would saving a labeled case from the last trim that is set to the correct length be used as a guide to set up your trim length in the future? Saving a trimmed / labeled case for each caliber may work?

Just trying to find a solution to setting up the trim length without screwing up brass by cutting them too short.

When you purchase any caliber cutter head you receive one piece of brass that has been set to SAMI spec. I place Redding lock rings on the collets, once they have been set and have one dedicated for each caliber and keep marked. It is very easy to swap collets and cutting heads in a matter of minutes and set to the exact length from last time. I would highly recommend!

I highly recommend these trimmers and have one for every caliber I use! Love them. Best investment I have made in the reloading equipment. One additional trick other than using the Foster or other lock rings is to put a die shim under the lock ring. This way you can make very small adjustments very quickly and the lock rings don't stick to the surface face of the trimmer. I bought these packages of die shims from Sinclair I think.

Does the Giraud not determine the depth of chamfer and deburr for you? The OP may want to to examine a case so trimmed to decide if he likes the wall profile at the case mouth. I prefer absolute minimal removal of material in chamfering, but opinions may vary.

PS Oops, he already ordered one. So, why ask how well folks like it if you already bought one? o_O

Giraud does everything. Had a Gracy and didn't like it. My Giraud is great. It was damaged during my move. Giraud repaired it no cost. Great customer service.

I bought seperate cutters for each cartridge being trimmed to greatly speed changing to different cases. I keep a refernce case to desired trim length to verify OAL when setting up. I also use a lock ring on the case holder and keep it locked down to the proper OAL. It is not as precise as a Wilson but close good enough. I don't think a 0.001" variation in case OAL will screw the pooch. Also the cutter does not produce a VLD type chamfer if the base is set flat against the tool holder. If you shim it to change the angle of the cutter you can get a 'VLD' type chamfer but it takes a bit of screwing around with it. My only desire would be for Doug to have a cutting insert that would produce a longer chamfer without having to shim the current one. All in all the Giraud unit is a major time saver in my shop.

I did order one before I posted. I did some research on it first, but wanted more feedback from you guys on a few questions i had. I knew it was a great trimmer and trim length is off the shoulder and full sizing in recommended as well.

What would be the angle of the chamfer inside and outside the mouth? Someone mentioned its not a VLD cut.

Anyone have any experience with both the Giraud and the Trim It II? Wondering what the pros and cons between the two might be. Thanks for any info.

I have a Giraud trimmer. It's set for my .308 F-TR brass and I never change it. I trim at every loading and it takes about 5 minutes to do 100 cases. This device is excellent.

How many thousandths below bullet diameter do you size the ID of your necks?

As an exercise, explain why a VLD chamfer angle would be beneficial if the neck ID was only 1 or 2 thousandths smaller than the bullet OD?

I normally size .002" below bullet diameter and as for VLD chamfer angle, its just a question that I am not really concerned because I use a regular deburring tool, just a question I just threw up there, if the VLD angle really matters at all.

My Giraurd trimmer also works very well on fired (unsized) cases. I trim before tumbling to remove the fine brass chips and dust that tend to scratch the neck when sizing.

Would you care to explain, curious minds wants to know.

The cutters from the Gracy are a two part cutter. One piece is a L looking shaped unit. It is to debur the outside of the neck. I do set that cutter to do that job. The second cutter is to cut the length and debur the inside of the casing. I set this cutter to just make a square face on the mouth. Then I will debur the inside in a separate step. The reason for this is I have trimmed hundreds of thousands of casings and it is wore out. So I set the part of the cutter that is to remove the inside bur more to the middle so it does not cut anything.

With this two step cutting I get very square mouths and just enough of a chamfer on the inside to allow a bullet to slip right in. I also crimp some of my ammo and with more metal at the very mouth of the casing I get a very uniform crimp.
