22/250 for deer

What a great deer bullet out of a fast twist 22/250 ?

I've killed deer dead in their tracks from 75- 300 yards with 75 grain amax bullets. I'm running them 3500fps out of a 22/243. I have found the amax bullets are a little light for wild hog though. Started working with 75gr swift sirocco but haven't hunted with them yet.

64g Winchester

60g Nosler partition

80g A Max Is reported to be awesome out of a 22/6 Rem AI at 3650 on deer, very experienced hunter, but I have no experience with the 80g A max.

65g Game king, 64g Winchester, and 60g partition are all stellar on deer and hogs; of the three, the 65g Game King is the most accurate and IMR 4350 with Win primers worked very, very well in the 3400-3500 area.

I ordered some 70gr Speer .224 bullets. I have some Sierra 77gr TMK bullets loaded up already at 3300 FPS . I've seen the average deer last weekend and I thinking I'm over gunning them with a 7 mag .

Funny you say that. I took my little 22/243 on a deer hunting trip once and caught hell from the guys. Dropped mine in his tracks, spent hours looking for one shot with a 30-06, and a guy blew his to pieces with a 7mag after shooting 3 times as it was trying to hobble off. It's more to do with shot placement.

Ive deer hunted for years with a 26" 9 twist 22-250. I put it together to shoot 600 F-class with and it liked 80gr Bergers so i used those and it didn't disappoint. 75-550 yards never had a problem. Wound channels looked a lot worse than the 308 wounds did with a 165gr Soft point and never lost one. Had one older doe run about 40 yards but the blood trail was easy enough to follow blindfolded.
Sierra 65gr Gamekings were another bullet that worked great in that rifle. They were easy to get a good load worked up and did a number on hogs also.

Another .22-250 with a 22" 12 twist shot 53gr Nosler Varmageddons very well so i gave them a try on deer depredations over soybeans this summer. Those little bullets worked great too. Only got out to 460 yards with them but neck shots and behind shoulder shots were dropping the deer with some nasty wound channels. Never got any splashes with shoulder shots either.

80gr Amax in my old 8" twist Brux .22-250...worked exceptionally well on deer. Farthest shot was 504 yds. Closest was 75 yds.

60gr Partitions are very deadly on deer. The 65gr Gameking would be another one to try. This would be my go to bullet

I have used 80gr amax at 3100fps and 62gr Barnes TTSX at 3600fps out of my 7 twist 22-250 on antelope.

With the 80s both took one chest at about 200 yards and gave me 50 yard death run before tipping over, chest cav was jello and there was an exit hole in both.

The 62gr Barnes planted one at about 145 yards with a brain shot, 110 yards with a neck shot, and 257 yards with a chest shot. All three exited and none of them took a step. This will be my go to bullet for 22 caliber hunting from now on I was extremely pleased with the performance.

My buddy is using the 69gr TSMK this year out of his 22-250 AI at about 3400fps, he has shot two antelope so far with it one under 200 and one at 355 yards. Everything exited and only took one shot.

Both the 62 Barnes TTSX and the 70 Grain TSX are solid copper, they mushroom in my 9 Twist 22-250 upon impact. Lead core bullets from a high speed rifle are not dependable to me.
From hogs to deer these are the best IMHO.

I shot deer and hogs with a short barrel Ruger #3 using Speer 70 grain in 220 Swift. No trailing with the Swift. DRT. Short barrel cut velocity to 3000 fps.

It would seem, from what I am reading here, the day of needing a .243 and above to take deer/antelope is now over thanks to the "big for bore" bullets and large case 22 centerfire rounds with the right twist in the barrel to stabilize the bullet........

If a .223 can stop the enemy in their tracks, why not a .224? Thought there are some states that still do not allow .22 caliber of any type for large game.

Up until recently Wyoming didn’t allow 22 caliber. We can now use them for deer and antelope along with things like wolves and lions, as long as they meet certain criteria, like shooting at least a 60gr projectile.

At reasonable hunting distance a fast 22 with a heavy bullet doesn’t give up much if anything to a 6mm. I’m having a 9 twist 223ai built right now setup for my suppressor. I can see my boys using it when they start hunting antelope and deer with me. Based on prior experience 62gr Barnes TTSX will be the bullet I use for 22 cal big game hunting, unless they come out with a 70 or 75 TTSX.

For 5-6 years out of high school, the only rifle I had to hunt with was a 22-250.
Used plain Jane, Hornady 55 gr spire points for everything from deer to prairie dogs.

Very, very experienced hunters that have skinned a lot of deer would never believe the damage that a 22/250 loaded with Nosler's accuracy load with a 60g partition will do to a deer, this can not be over stated. In a 12 twist-9 twist, they are plenty accurate for deer.

there is no perfect round. I will say, that no enemy soldier I ever shot in RVN with my M-16 or M-203 ever complained. Or got back up.

I have a great-niece, that is about five-two and 95 lbs; that has shot her deer every year in Oregon since 2011 with the factory 64gr Winchester factory 22-250 load; and never had to shoot a second time, or track them more than a few yards. She is a good shot, and fussy about the shots she takes. Her Father uses a Mauser 98 custom in 300 WM. His are not any deader. Bullet placement is the answer...
