.28 Nosler vs. 30 Nosler

What are wanting to do with them? First I'll say these are hunting rounds, not go out and shoot all day rounds. I have both, the 30 is going to have much better barrel life. At 100 rounds my 28s throat moved .017" and the 30 has moved zero. Accuracy is excellent with both. Ballistics will go to the 28 my a slim margin, killing power to the 30. All I hunt is elk so I prefer the 30 just for the larger bullets. The 30 does have noticeably more recoil.

I have personally shot (3) 28 Noslers, I own two and have another being built now. All were built by great smiths and all shot extremely well with the 195 EOL bullets. These are hunting rifles and my guess is the shooter was the limiting factor in all the rifles. It is simply hard to shoot .25 MOA groups out of a hunting rifle that recoils. This is also accuracy that will probably never be realized in the field. I have shot (2) 30 Noslers. Both were just as accurate as the 28's. One was a factory Nosler rifle that held .5-.75 MOA out to 1400 yards. The second is a rifle I had built for my wife with a Proof carbon barrel. I have only shot it out to 600 yards, but it is shows great promise with limited load development with 210 bullets. I think both are fine rounds and would serve hunters well. I am a heavy bullet fan and wouldn't hesitate to use the 30 on big bears, while the 28 might be a shade light. On elk, I don't think it would matter with good shot placement.

I have built quite a few 28 Noslers. If one doesnt shoot its not because of the cartridge. I have been seriously impressed by the accuracy of both the 28 and 30.

Yes, I should have clarified for longer range hunting on big game, with elk being the largest. I have shot three .28 Noslers, and with brakes on each of them, recoil was very, very, manageable. Just didn't know if there was a ballistic edge for either one. The reamer I am using for the .28's has a .280 free bore, and I am using a Wyatts MBE-3 box. Seems to work very well. I have not built, or shot a .30 cal version yet, hence the question... Thanks for all of the responses, and keep them coming!

For your usage either will do the job. I am liking the 30 personally. I am running the 215 at 3100 with H1000. Perfect elk round IMO. I have killed elk with the 28 and 195, it performed great. The real question is do you have an issue with the 7mm bullets? Some have a strong opinion that 7mms are not enough on elk. I dont share this opinion, but I like in elk country and many many people shy away from 7mms. You wont see much real world performance in my opinion. The 30 will kick more but last longer, thats the biggest difference between them.

Hey Alex, I am a big 7mm fan. Have killed dozens of elk, deer and antelope with the good old 7mm Rem mag. As far as the 7mm being enough bullet? I have a buddy that kills a bull almost every year with a 6.5 x 55, so I know how effective a properly placed shot can be. I will say that he tries to limit his shots to 400 yards and under though.

No penetration. Most of the elk and deer we shot with them ran off or had to be shot again after making GOOD lung shots! No tracking with the 180 vld, 7 Saum. Or at least throat the 28 so you have some other bullet options.

I have not had any first hand problems with the 195. But Lonnie is one of a couple people that I trust that has. So I do believe what he is saying here. I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with the lot of bullets you get because some seem to penetrate great.

The 28 and 30 Nosler are potentially great rounds. Originally designed for hunting. That an important factor should be thought about bullet selection. In my opinion Berger bullets are better target bullets than hunting bullets. I have found the Barnes LRX, TTXXX, the Nosler LR Accubonds are better choices for hunting.

I have not done a 33 nosler, but have done plenty of 338 edges and rums. I love them for elk. The problem is brass for the rum and the cases are so long for the edge I really prefer it as a single shot. I am ordering a 33 nos reamer for the 250 bergers, which kill like crazy by the way.

do you know if the 250 OTM seated at 3.650 would have all the bearing surface above the neck shoulder junction in the 33 Nosler case??

It should, certainly in a wyatts box it will be fine. My rum reamer puts a 250 just at the junction and fits a wyatts.

The xx-Nosler is designed to fit in to a 3.340 magazine with recommended seating depths.

Who would waste the accuracy and case capacity of seating to magazine length that short? Not me.

Any RUM or 300 Weatherby magazine box is perfect for xx-Nosler run out to more optimal seating depths.

I've got an unfired Remington Sendero (original version) in 300RUM. Looks like I might be able to rechamber to 28 or 30 Nosler and have a long, useful mag feed from the standard mag box.
