Low budget 300 WSM

Thinking of picking up a 300 wsm for the occasional long shot on deer and maybe elk in the near future. I can get a howa or tc venture for $500.00 or less. I already have the dies for it so will be handloading. The rifle would be for shots up to 500 yards and would not be my primary hunting rifle. It will be a stand rifle only. If I were going to shoot it regularly I'd drop more money but this won't be the case. Please share your opinions about these rifles. Thanks.

My cousin has a Tikka lite in 300 and it shoots very well. This could be an option. The Howa is used. I don't think they make it anymore. I do have 300 Win. Dies also but have shot and loaded for the short mag and really like how it loads and the accuracy.

I don't have a 300 win mag just dies. My choice of the two would be belt free brass. Between the two 300's I find the short mag easier to load for. I hate the Tikka magazine but they do shoot.

I miss read the post and thought he had a 300 win mag not just dies. But in a hunting rifle how does better brass and more accurate matter? An Elk has a vital area big as a beach ball and when you hunt the brass is most likely lost. All that being said if I didn't have one I would buy a short mag also. But if I had a 300win mag, for hunting I wouldn't change for the difference.

I have a Howa 1500 in .300 WSM. It's a hunting rifle. It excels in that role. Plenty accurate (first two shots from a cold, clean barrel are almost always 1.5" high at 100 and touching), it carries well and the Hogue stock really seems to make it mannerly on the shoulder. Mine's an older model, before they came from the factory with the Hogue, so the stock is a mod. Having shot it with old Tupperware stock and the Hogue, I can vouch for the difference in felt recoil.

I've fired Ventures but I do not own one. The TC may have an advantage when it comes to the barrel. TC factory barrels tend to be a fair bit better than average in terms of internal finish but I consider that an issue that lives at the margins for a hunting rifle.

In any event, I can recommend the Howa based on personal experience. It'll do the job.

The TC has a 22 in barrel. I'd rather have 24 to 26 in the short mag if it's just an open country rifle. I have a 3006 extreme weather or a 1988 Rem classic in 35 Whelen for 99% of my hunting. Both wear Leupold 1.5 × 5 scopes and have 22 in barrels. The short mag with 24 in will be about the same length as the 35 W with that long Rem action.
