For those of us who no longer tumble our brass, I have found an alternative to steel wool for cleaning the outside of cases.
Green (general purpose) Scotch-Brite pads work for many, but I found that grit to be too abrasive. 3M shows that grit at 420-600, equivalent to #00-#000 steel wool. But they also offer an "ultra fine" light grey pad with a grit of 800, equivalent to #0000 steel wool. The 3M designation is #7448.
You still have to wipe the cases with a soft cloth after because all Scotch-Brite pads cast off a very fine abrasive dust, especially when new. But this works better for me than de-greasing steel wool and dealing with rusty pads and tiny slivers of steel.
Amazon carries boxes of 20 pads (6"x9") for $25 shipped.
