How to reload rat shot???

Never done it... but Ive seen the caps for sale, just never the tiny bb's... not sure how it works, how youd seat plastic caps, where to find the bb's, etc etc etc..

Id assume a little charge of trailboss would be about all itd need...

I cant even find 22lr rat shot for less than $20-$25 a small box of em anymore... it used to be cheap... 22 mag rat shot would be nice too.
 
I used to load "snake shot" for my 357. I made my own shot cups. If you are talking about making 22LR rat shot you are going to have to work at it.
I watched a guy buy two boxes of 38 special shot cartridges today. He uses them for snakes and it is snake season around here.
 
If you buy the capsules they're really easy. Fill the capsule with shot, prime and charge the case and push the capsule in. If you can find ballast from a fork lift sometimes they use lead shot that's about #12. It works great on rats in my chicken coop. And it's a blast literally and figuratively!

Rat shot/snake shot... thought it was the same..

Cant find the small shot bbs tho...
 
Not sure what your doing with them, but if you're after something quiet for close qtrs I've used these sub sonic .22's just this week with decent success with head shots on critters quite a bit bigger than rats. The trigger falling makes about as much noise as the rd going off. I shot a tin can full of wet paper and at 25 ft it went thru both sides of the can. They also have the same 20 gr ball loaded one step hotter, but these are silent and seemed fairly accurate.

Ya I have some of those. I was wanting to try to make snake shot to carry on me at the ranch..
 
You can but a bag of shot for reloading shot gun shells or buy a box of shells and cut one(carefully) and use that shot. If you are loading for a center fire pistol you can use gas checks or several layers of thin card board like the kind used for spiral notebooks to place under and over the shot charge. I have not made them in a long time and forget exactly how I did it but do remember punching out the card board will a overly chamfered case. I used some Elmer's wood glue to seal the end and keep the card board in place. I was very frugal in my younger days. Hell I still am to a great extent. I drive a POS car because it still runs. lol.

My diesel jetta still runs, shes gonna be driven into the ground!!! Only hit 200k miles hete recently, cars falling apart around the motor!
 
I wished i could find the 22 rfs. I use them to run off stray dogs. If you let them get a few yards out it dont really hurt them. It just scares the poo out of them. And thats what i want as i do NOT want to hurt them bad or i would just blast them with a vmax.
 
7 1/2's work much better on snake skull penetration, 38/357 mag or three buckshot, old speer manuals have the load data.
 
Just buy a bag of shot or some shotgun ammo and cut them open. I was never happy with them. I also have chickens so I do not like the idea of a bunch of lead laying around.

My Jetta is at 245K and half the buttons don't work the A/C is out but the motor is fine. I shall run it till it fails or till I move next year which ever comes first.

If I can find my load data for rat/snake shot I will send it to you.

That is exactly how I made shotshells for my .41 mag Blackhawk, back in the day (35 years ago). Never shot anything that bled, but very impressive on a pattern board and at least as effective as the .357 & .44 CCI Hot shot loads I tried.

Probably ought to add that I used a healthy dose of blue dot powder and never weighed the shot (that I recall), just relied on a youthful belief in my infalliability.

Speer Loading Manual Number 10, Page 401. Speer used to make and sell the reloading kits(less shot). Haven't seen the reloading kits in quite a while. Good luck on your search. Send me a PM if you want more info.

22 rat shot had a crimp on the case then seald don't no what size the shot was
but you could shoot it at base boards and it was hard to see the holes.killed
a lot of rats when I was a kid and birds.
 
Be careful wit rimfires and pulling bullets. Had a childhood schoolmate who got his appentectimy (sp) with shards of a 22 rimfire case that he popped off while "pulling" a bullet. :eek:

Field and Stream has 22 shotshells in stock locally. By the time you invest the time, just buy em...

Or make them easier with 38's as mentioned before. Cardboard, #9's and some Unique. Crimp and seal..
