savage loading problem

If it wasn't for this Savage I wouldn't have a thing to post about LOL. This afternoon I was sighting in. I fired about twelve rounds. I adjusted three more and came out to shoot. The first two went fine and the third would not allow the bolt to go home. I opened the bolt and the round stayed in the chamber so I put a cleaning rod down the barrel and pushed the round out of the chamber. I expected it to be stuck but it came out very easy. I checked it for any obvious defects and could not find anything wrong. I went in and loaded another round and it would not chamber either. I was loading new Hornady brass and had not experienced any problems before this. I put the calipers on the brass and it was shorter ( minimal ) than specs. The bullet was not jammed in the lands, and the brass was not stuck in chamber. I closed the bolt without any round in it and it closed and locked fine. Any ideas?

Savages are known for their tight chambers. I had a 10 that I couldn't resize once fired lake city brass enough to get it to chamber. Instead of buying a small base die I sold that brass. Have you used the Hornady OAL length guage and measured your chamber?

Two thoughts

Check to see if.brass filings have built up under the extractor. Take it.out and clean it.well. check the spring for proper tension.

Call SSS for their upgraded extractor kit.

Before you take the bolt apart try full length resizing you brass and trimming to length. Your extractor probably did not click over the rim so it could not grab hold to pull it out.
If you decide to remove extractor from the bolt head DO IT IN A ZIP LOCK BAG, the spring and ball bearing will launch into parts unknown ( experience has shown me). Get a 0.140 ball bearing from local bike shop and replace the one in there with it, it will put more tension on the extractor. Also can try cleaning the chamber and/or the lugs maybe a little crud got into that space and isn't letting the lugs rotate into position.
All little things but they add up to head aches.

A dumb question , is it the correct brass /cartridge for your rifles chamber ?
It sounds like it just pushing the case into the chamber and its ( case ) isn't long enough to protrude from the chamber to be caught by the extractor .
Did your extractor fall out ?

Thanks guys, the extractor was the only thing I could think of, and YES the spring and ball does fly to parts unknown. I sure appreciate the help.

Yes I measured the chamber. I have shot approx. 55 rounds through it.

Thanks. When looking as far into the chamber that I could, I did notice more brass debris than I expected. I will try to g

Yes it is the clip extractor, but the rifle is new.
The reason I asked is I had a old one where the breach of the barrel has a counterbore like a Remington and a c clip type extractor and it never would load right or extract right so I took a long action bolt body from one I replaced with a ptg one and cut it to right lengthy redrilled and reamer cross pin hole in right orientation for a new stile
bolt head and replaced bolt head
No more problem.
And the ejector needs to be removed from the magazine

Just my experiance, not ment as advice or recommendation use at own risk

Neck sizer only

Are you using a neck sizer die only, or are you backing the F/L out to just size the neck? If you are backing a F/L die out, it can buckle the shoulder enough, that it will not chamber. All you need to do, is a shoulder bump. Turn the F/L down until the bolt closes.

Neck sizer only
Oldshooter I have 15 Savages and I am almost willing to bet that is the problem right there. I know a lot of people will say I'm wrong but when loading for my rifles neck sizing has never worked as advertised.
One other thing I forgot to mention is on the extractor make sure the edge is not worn, hit it with a file to bring the edge back, even though it is relatively new some times they just aint right.

Wow, this is the first neck sizer I've ever used. One of the best shooters I know here recommended the neck sizer so there I went LOL. It is certainly worth taking a look at.

Thanks Sir. This rifle is one month old so it should not be worn anywhere. I would bet you're right about the neck sizer, this being the first one I've ever used.

OldShooter,
Have you tested with another brand of brass (Lapua) to see if you get the same resistance? You could also have a bad batch of brass in which the body is not properly sized and needs to be run through a Body Die or Small Based Die. Tight chambers will do that when the brass is liberally fat or the shoulder angle is out to lunch. Just something to consider.
