savage loading problem

OldShooter,
Have you tested with another brand of brass (Lapua) to see if you get the same resistance? You could also have a bad batch of brass in which the body is not properly sized and needs to be run through a Body Die or Small Based Die. Tight chambers will do that when the brass is liberally fat or the shoulder angle is out to lunch. Just something to consider.

Thank you for the input. I don't know if it was due to taking the extractor out and replacing a lost ball or not, but I put the bolt back together with the new ball and chambered the two rounds that messed me up with no problem. Mr Coody seamed to be on track with buil up in the extractor itself. Thank you all for your help.

I don't know how many of you guys realize that Oldshooter is 80 yrs young ? ........... I hope I'm as sharp, communicative, and willing to learn new stuff when I reach his age. What a pleasure it is to follow and communicate with him. :)

If it wasn't for this Savage I wouldn't have a thing to post about LOL. This afternoon I was sighting in. I fired about twelve rounds. I adjusted three more and came out to shoot. The first two went fine and the third would not allow the bolt to go home. I opened the bolt and the round stayed in the chamber so I put a cleaning rod down the barrel and pushed the round out of the chamber. I expected it to be stuck but it came out very easy. I checked it for any obvious defects and could not find anything wrong. I went in and loaded another round and it would not chamber either. I was loading new Hornady brass and had not experienced any problems before this. I put the calipers on the brass and it was shorter ( minimal ) than specs. The bullet was not jammed in the lands, and the brass was not stuck in chamber. I closed the bolt without any round in it and it closed and locked fine. Any ideas?
if you rebarreled this yourself your headspace could not be tight enough, I always headspace mine 2x one with gauges then fireformed and FL resized brass the second time more like a fine tune, this gets me 0001.5 shoulder space, bad headspace can cause extraction issues, especially if the headspce is loose and ignition is slamming the case around I think

Thank you sir, this is a factory rifle with about 60 rounds through it. The problem was in the ejector. All good now

Yes they did have problems. Right off the rip I had extractor issues with a model 10 LEB2. Had to replace the original extractor within the first 100 rounds. No more issues since, 1000's of rounds have been thru that action and bolt since. I have new parts to rebuild the bolthead soon before issues occur.

I called Savage and they had never heard about ejector problems with their rifles . They are sending me a new ejector and pin.

Standard customer service 101. "No, we've never heard of this problem before"

Haha.

On my 12 f-class I had trouble with case ejection, so I stole the extractor off my LRPV, problem solved. Called savage and much like you, there was no question or argument. They just offered and shipped me a new ball and extractor free of charge. Say what you want, savage rifles shoot, and their customer service is pretty top notch !

I agree whole heartedly. They said that they have had a few complaints about the extractor but was not aware of a "batch " of them. I too took a extracted off an older rifle, my life is now complete LOL
