Getting discouraged

So im starting to get really discouraged with this new rifle. A weatherby in 300 win mag 1:10 twist. I loaded hornady cases because i had 200 new sitting here with berger 185gr classic hunters and h1000 and rem 9.5 magnum primers. I shot 4 groups of 5 rounds of each load in a ocw test and found .030" off the lands and 78 grains was in the middle of the only node i found. Average was 2920 on virgin bras. Max with this combo is 79.5 grains a distinctive ejector mark and primers were starting to flatten. So i picked 78 and loaded 50 rounds and saw no problems at all. Now the lot of 100 peices has been once fired i sized and bumbed the shoulder .001" the body gets sized .003" with the die i have. Loaded 50 with the 78gr charge. There shooting great on a clean or dirty barrel untill today. Out of 25 that i shot over my chrono 2 caused the bolt to stick really bad. Only two, they also had a ejector mark and swipe. Heres the weird part the other 23 shots were around 2960 fps these 2 showed 2901fps? So low velocity and sticky bolt( had to smack the bolt open) but all primers looked great and the groups were good. Im getting discouraged because this load had shot great nothing changed i checked my scale with weights. Same lot of bullets, primers, powder the outside temp was within 6 degrees. Also wouldn't i lose a bit of velocity with once fired. The base to shoulder from new to fired on the brass is a .008" diffrence. But i dont think that should cause a problem if anything it should increase case capacity and should theoretically lower pressure a bit. Im about ready to pull my hair out. What could have changed?

Any chance you had oil, wax, or grease on the cartridge case? Just looking at the picture on my phone your primer doesn't look that bad.

Right before i went out i wrapped a patch around a brush and saoked in gun scrubber and cleaned the chamber. Would the tumbler media additive (frankford case polish) cause any problems? I use 1 teaspoon per 3lbs of media. Ive been using it for a while now and havent had any problems.

Why would bumping them back more cause the problem to go away? I set the shoulder length using the stripped bolt method so there truly only .002" shorter than the chamber

Really sounds like you had some kind of lubricant on those cases. Water will cause it to, any chance of condensation on the cases?

Usually the culprit is lube left on the case after sizing.

thinking about it the box of shells was in my basement thats at 60 degrees, took them shooting it was 72 and sunny. cases were run through the ultra sonic and then the tumbler after they were dry.

I covered a case in black sharpie and sized it its making contact all the way down to the web but the before and after measurement is only .0005" smaller so im going to have to get a custom die. But would this explain the ejector marks? It would cause the hard bolt lift due to not sizing enough but the ejector marks still stump me. Also i wiped off some of the cases with m pro 7 cleaner and alot of black powder like substance came off. Media might need to be changed.

If it's the plunger style ejector.. Is it moving free or maybe stuck somewhat?
Just a shot in the dark, but sometimes they get some crud in them limiting free movement. I run a lot of range brass before storing and change the media when its really nasty so I don't think thats it. Altho if you suspect it go ahead and replace it.

It is a plunger style and i just cleaned the bolt ut moved freely. What dont get it my die was sixing the body .003" and now its only.0005". I thought about a carbon ring but looked in the neck with a cheap borescope and it was all clean. I will clean the chamber again and wipe the ammo down again and see what happens. This all started at about 35 rounds down a clean barrel.

Iam sorry for even asking this stop but was the brass resized already did you by chance mix up some sized brass with some unsized brass, giving you the .0005 reading instead of the normal .003..

So the above makes me wonder if you left some gun scrubber in the chamber which is super easy to do. This will be like water which will prevent the case from properly grabbing he chamber and will give you pressure signs. This should happen to the first one or two rounds – is that when you saw the problem?

It was shot 11 and 12 out of 26 shots. All the brass was resized and cleaned. I took a couple of cases that i shot yesterday and resized them. They only sized the .0005" i took a once fired peice and it sized .003" so after the first firing therr acting like there springing back a bunch. I double checked my scale with weights and its spot on. Im getting really confused on what caused this.

People who reload belted magnums must use the Innovative Technologies collet die to size just in front of the belt. It also has a gauge built in to see if the case is within specifications without the use of the die. Cost is about $95, from www.larrywillis.com, and it works on all the usual belted magnums. For information, the case just in front of the belt must not exceed 0.510", or the case will stick either going into the chamber or coming out.
