Changing Times

I've hunted in Texas...forget about it. There's no way in hell im paying 3000-5000 to hunt private land. Got it they need to make money, but this is capitalism and as a customer I don't purchase their product.

Missouri was nice. Guys found out I hunted and would let me on their property for free. They didn't have to, and I was willing to pay some cash for their generousity.

Georgia, my home state, is hit or miss. There are guys who honestly need to pay their property taxes and then there are the a$$holes who "have the biggest deer in ga" therefore charge you 5000 a year.

The saddest thing that's happened to my family, hunting wise, was a lease we had for 30 plus years. My uncles friend ended up passing away and his wife gave the property to the kids (adults now). Our lease went from $200 a person to $1000 overnight. The kids knew my dad and uncle too!!

So yeah I feel for some guys who need the cash, but I cringe at a lot of the scum bags out there who are just screwing their battle buddy.

Times are indeed changing....

We had 100 acres in southeast Pa. back in the 60s, 70s and 80s. In the early years, we were surrounded by other farms. We were free to hunt and trap about 1000 acres in the 70s. It's all housing developments, now. I'm just glad I lived in the "good old days" and experienced it. It's sad to see everything change. Any body remember when Bonanza and The Virginian were the top rated TV shows? Combat was a good one, too. Black and white and no remote.

I still watch both Bonanza and The Virginian on ME-TV... Those excellent days are long gone and I doubt it will ever get any better..
I'm hooked on "Larami" right now. It's one of the best of the western series also. I've been thinking about the difference between those shows and ANYTHING that is popular today. Almost all of those westerns presented the viewer with a moral dilemma, evil to be overcome, insurmountable tasks, bravery in the face of evil -- they taught boys how to become men, and men how to be brave.

Look at the entertainment today, and it's no wonder that we have twisted little psychos taking their guns to school and shooting the place up. Yeah the times have changed all right. jd

Your statement is one of the most insightful, profound I have seen in quite some time! You are VERY correct! I have one of my fav scenes that has always stuck with me: Adam was with a Military Captain who was a murderous maniac. Eventually he figured out what he was up to>> the wholesale slaughter of every Indian in his path. Well the rest of the Cartwrights showed up, soon they knew and tried to avert a war and to get the Captain arrested. They had to negotiate with "Sitting Bull" who was a man of his word. Long story short, the Captain was arrested and war was averted, largely due to Sitting Bull. At the end Hoss turns to Ben and said " You know, He (Sitting Bull) is really a decent sort of fellow". Ben replies "Most men are, given half a chance"! When will you every see something like that on "Friends" or whatever else kind of non-sense is out there now?

I watch Bonanza every day. It is a great show. What I want to know is what happened to Bugs Bunny, Roadrunner, Daffy Duck and all the Saturday morning cartoons. Matt
I think they have turned into "SpongeBob Pants" or whatever kind of stupidness is now for kids! This was a great loss too!

Bugs Bunny got removed because it wasn't "Politically correct". Same for the others, too.

Wait a minute... I still watch bugs bunny with my boys!!!! Road Runner, Tom and Jerry, Andy Griffith...

I live in a place 20 years behind the rest of the U.S. only 20 years ago I remember having a rifle in the vehicle at high school, carried a pocket knife everyday. Things have changed, but not as fast around here. I can still hunt on most property that is private owned just by asking, but that is changing also... fewer family farms, people pass away and land is handed down. I just hope my 2 boys enjoy the time spent today because when they get my age I wonder if they will have the opportunity to do what we do now.

Couple changing times stories in my repertoire. Back in the late 60's I worked at the former Westinghouse plant in Lester, PA. It was adjacent to Philly International airport. When I was on the day shift, before work a couple buddies and I would hunt pheasants and rabbits in the swamp behind the plant, planes coming in for a landing right over our heads. If we got anything, we'd bring it in to the plant in a paper grocery bag, clean it and put it on dry ice until we got off work. Never got any flak from anyone but it was a rough neighborhood anyway. I came out after third shift one morning and the rear axle on my car was sitting on two milk crates.:(

Before that while still in high school, I had a good friend who owned an old stepside Ford. We'd saddle up on a Friday or Saturday evening with a few other miscreants, grab the .22s and pellet guns and head for the same airport for some rat shooting with spotlights. At the time it had a fence but the gates out in the swamp were in disrepair and generally "open". After an hour or two of blasting those varmints we were stopped by security. The only questions they had were what are you guys doing and then how many did you get? Wished us good luck and drove off. Today? Swat teams, helicopters, Humvees and live "BREAKING NEWS" on CNN. Did I mention those landing lights on the big jets are BRIGHT ? :D

Bonanza use to come on every Sunday night at 8:00 back in the day
Along with a lot of other old western shows like Wanted Dead or Alive, Rawhide, The Rifleman, Have Gun will Travel, and Gunsmoke, Bonanza is on MEtv every Saturday. Great shows and nothing even remotely close to the garbage on TV today.

I was going to post that but I figured nobody would. Remember the girls screaming? I do. I have some bad memories about that.I was just becoming aware of "girls". Do you remember the pants guys wore during that time? We didn't have a lot of money back then. I got my brother's "hand me down" clothes and I was always out of style. I learned to make up for it with charm.;)
