Glass bedding a Savage mdl 12

I'm ready to glass bed a 308 Savage mdl 12 action. How far back from the action lug should I bed the action? Just past the front trigger screw all the way back?

Yeah the tang is supposed to float on savages.

Hah! Not where I was going with this at all :D

The factory rifles are not bedded per se; don't think they have an official stance on that sort of thing.

I was just reading thru here and got to thinking about a couple rifles that I have that were bedded by very good, but traditional, gunsmiths... not Savage specialists. Pretty sure the tangs aren't free-floated but I'll check. I've always heard the thing about free-floating the tang, as much as .030".

Figured I'd ask someone who'd actually done it themselves ;)

Theres no point in bedding rear of the last pillar. However, I think the idea that it NEEDS to be floated has come from stress free bedding jobs that werent stress free ;)

Well I bedded to just past the rear guard screw. Seemed to shoot good. Since the tang just hangs there with no guard screw I didnt see any reason to cause myself problems by putting upward pressure on it. And like you I've heard many people leave clearance there. I don't think I'll be bedding anymore savages though so I won't be able to test this theory out some more.

Many THANKS for the replies. I think that the action will bed bedded from the barrel lug to just past the 3'rd action pillar. Again thanks for your input.
