25 cal varminter

The standard 25-06 ain't nothing to sneeze at. I have run 87 gr Sierra at 3300 fps with IMR 4350 and shooting ground hogs and its red mist and scattered pieces.

25-06 ACKLEY FOR ME LOVE MINE THAT THING IS BAD WITH H 4831 SC AND 210M PRIMERS AND THE OLD 87GR FOLWER HP AT 3600 FPS THERE NOT TO MANY CRITTERS THAT CAN TAKE IT H/S PREICSON STOCK REM 700 ACTION 26'' HART BARREL MAKES A FINE RIFLE !!!!!!!

My 25.06 fell in love with 75 gr VMax bullets. A max load of 4064 and it's very happy. I tried quite a few different powders but IMR 4064 was finally the one. One thing I found is, that it always seemed to shoot better with max or very near max loads.

I have killed a bunch of deer and some coyotes with my old 257AI and 100 gr Il's at 3150 mv. When I get my new barrel I'm going to put her back to work. Barlow

I got my 257 Roberts guns (a matched set of youth and adult) in a raffle. They cost me just $15 for the pair of Browning A-Bolts. The great part of that was that I was looking for a 257 Roberts to kind of balance out my small caliber guns. Now I just have to work up a load for each gun. I doubt the same load will work in both a 20" barrel and the 22" barrel but I might get surprised.

I'm shooting that combo in mine as a varmint round. Don't remember the charge weight off the top of my head but MV is 3560 in a 23" barrel.

Well I know some guys don't like dealing with belted rounds but if you really want to "decorate the landscape" with pieces of varmint, then try the 257 Weatherby.
I was shooting 87 grain Sierras at 3870 fps and it left foxes almost unrecognizable and even large groundhogs were reduced to greasy spots on the ground with pieces hanging from the nearby bushes!
I haven't used it for varmints lately, too much noise and a large mushroom cloud of dust kicked up from muzzle blast shooting prone with bipod.

I may not use that particular cartridge but, thanks for the report on the effectiveness of the 87gr sierra! What twist barrel if you don't mind me asking?

You answered my question JRS, thank you! I was wondering what would be the best way to go for twist? I was thinking 10 was a bit much but, wondered if 12 would be enough? Now I know!

Mike
You're quite welcome, Mike. When shooting the heavier bullets, 110-120 Gr. a 10 twist is just fine, and will also work with lighter bullets. However, a 9 twist for the heavies is optimal.

Not too concerned on barrel life, it's going to take years of shooting to shoot the barrel out on woodchucks!
That may well be, but a 250 AI launching an 87- gr TNT will provide all the mayhem you want, and is superbly accurate. It's essentially a 25 Creedmore.

I have a panda with a 257 weatherby 26" 1:12 twist on it. 85gr Nosler Ballistic tips at 3800 ish are pretty rough on pdogs.

And just for some fun and historical perspective, I can suggest the .257 Condor created by Dr. Ramon Somavia of California. This is a cartridge much like the Weatherby but with a 44 degree shoulder and a case capacity of 75 grains of water. Dr. Somavia developed this cartridge over many years in conjunction with some of the top gunsmiths in the US at the time. The intent was to shoot heavy for caliber bullets at the upper end of the velocity spectrum. Here is a terrific historic article from Guns magazine 1960:

Here is the drawing of the case from Municion.org:

I was able to get some of the stories and information firsthand from one of the gunsmiths involved in the project many years later when I was his apprentice. So, needless to say, I have a couple of .257 Condors with brass made from the 7x61 S&H Super brass.

My hunting rifle has a 24" barrel and gets a tad more than 3300 fps. with the Nosler 115 gr. BT. Maybe not spectacular but certainly better than average for the Mule deer and elk I hunt.

Regards.

I'm voting for the 25-06AI. I run the berger 115gr from my 24" 25-06 and a mid load is going 3150 pretty easy. I've run out of time lately but have a couple boxes of 75gr to try out and see how fast they'll push. I'm hoping to hit over 3500fps, which will surely do some damage.

If you end up w/ the AI, there is some load data from this page and some members that I'd be willing to share if you don't have starting points. I've killed two mule deer, two whitetails, and two pronghorns with the AI since 2012 (along with a pile of groundhogs). I started with the 115VLD in the 3,250 range and switched to a 100gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Shortest whitetail was 75 yards, longest pronghorn at 514. Only one has taken a step after being hit - a good bodied mule deer at 200 yards made one bound (unfortunately down a ravine that it had to be drug back up).

You'll be satisfied.
