Redding competition shellholder

Hi I recently purchased a set of competition shellholders to control the bumping of the shoulder, the thing is they recommend 1-2 thou for proper headspace,I measured a fired brass to unfired brass and it was 10 thou stretch,so I put the shellholder that would bump it the least and I still ended up with a 5thou difference....Any suggestions?
Thanx..

Spring back?

Are you saying that you used the +.010 shell holder and you still pushed the shoulder back .005?

And what brand die are you using?

I will assume you used the #2 shell holder. And I will assume you assumed the case was sized; I am the fan of verifying. If I used the #2 shell holder and the top of the shell holder made contact with the bottom of the die the case should have been returned to minimum length/full length sized. But if there is a gap between the bottom of the die and top of the shell holder the case was not full length sized meaning the case was not returned to minimum length, is die contacted the shell holder the case returned to full length size + .002".

I have a set of the competition shell holders, it is a #6 set. I purchased it because the dealer at the gun show wanted $5.00 for the set. 3 of the shell holders are off by .001" each, that does not bother me because I have never used them and I have always used feeler gages when adjusting the die off the shell holder. I place the feeler gage between the top the shell holder and top of the die. I make the adjustment with a .02" thick feeler gage.

And then there are belted cases, the case belt sets in the shell holder on the belt. And then comes the part where you assume the case is sized because you raised the ram. I determine the case is sized when the top of the shell holder contacts the bottom of the die. And then there is that thing about the belted case being difficult to shove into the die because the case above the belt is too large in diameter.

I have found belted cases that failed because the case ahead of the belt was .017" larger in diameter than SAAMI said it should be.

??? I agree; what is that about?

I am the only one that has enough curiosity to cut/remove the belt from the case to prevent the belt from getting in the way. I have to have two gages because I want to know the length of the chamber from the shoulder to the bolt face.

And then there is pulling the shoulder forward when the sizing ball is pulled through the neck, there again, we have no reloaders with enough curiosity to determine if it exist. Well, there is one.

Hi
I was told to use redding competition shellholders #6 for 7saum,is that correct?
Thanx

Remove the competition shell holder and put a standard shell holder on the ram. Raise the ram and place a .014 feeler gauge on top of the shell holder. Now screw the die down until it contacts the shell holder with the feeler gauge on top. Tighten the die down and size a fired case and measure. Play with the feeler thickness until the desired bump is achieved.

P.S. Do not read or respond to F.Guffey postings or you will go insane.

The +.006 competition shell holder pushes the case .006 less into the die than a standard shell holder. If your information is correct the +.010 shell holder should give the correct shoulder bump.

These competition shell holders are marked +.002, +.004, +.006, +.008 and +.010. And the higher the + (plus) number the "LESS" shoulder bump you have.

If the +.006 was still .005 shoulder bump the +.010 should be .001 shoulder bump.

Then use feeler gauges and raise the die, you might have a long chamber or a short die.

What is the difference in shoulder location of a new unfired case and a fired case. This would be your head clearance or the "air space" between the rear of the case and the bolt face. And how much the case will stretch on the first firing. If this distance is excessive the case will stretch and thin in the base web area and can cause case head separations.

From 7SAUM"

"I was told to use redding competition shellholders #6 for 7saum,is that correct?"

YES, a Redding # 6 shellholder is correct HOWEVER you inserted the word 'competition' which TO ME means a #6 shellholder set BUT with 5 different shellholder heights.

And here is a tip....follow pete1955's reply #13 ....last paragraph

Yes , unscrew the die in increments untill you get close to your achieved goal.. the shell holders you speak of will not help in this instance.. meaning you will have to control it with a gap between the die and the shell holder on a case by case basis... not a big deal.

Why cant you back the die off and start over with the new shell holders?

The # 6 set is the number set for the belted magnums. RCBS number for the same shell holder is the #4. The number 2 shell holder should add .002" to the length of the case from the case head to the to the shoulder. Before you started using the shell holders I would suggest you measure the deck height of each shell holder. I understand reloaders are told the Precision Competition shell holders are precession but again I have the #6 set and three of the 5 shell holders are off by .001" each. It has not been that long ago when a member went ballistic when he measured the deck height on his shell holders and found 2 that were not correct, instead of calling Redding he went straight to the Internet. For all I know my set was cheap because they were not precession.. again, that does not drive me to the curb because the belted shell holder and the length of the case from the shoulder to the bolt face can create problems .

And I am flattered, I see a member has cut and pasted my use of the feeler gage when adjusting the length of the case.
