300 Norma Mag

So I am ready for my dump truck rifle. I am wanting to put the smack down on steel out to 1000 yards plus. I think this is the cartridge I want but I would like some insight and maybe a dummy round from someone if they are will to send one to me. (I'll pay)

That is a lot of powder for steel. I have great results out past 1200 with my 6-47L and 6.5 WSSM, and I get the pleasure of actually seeing the bullet splash off of the steel. I have plenty of 300 WSM's, 300 WBY's and a 338 EDGE, but 9 out of 10 rounds sent down range are from the smaller calibers. When we decide to shoot the 1300 - 1800 yard targets we go to the bigger cal's.

Now, if you gotta go big, I think you are spot on!!! I am shooting up the gaggle of 30 caliber 1000 yard comp tubes I have in inventory, so my choice is already made up for me.

Just my .02.

Tod

I think it is like when the 6.5x47L came out. if you have one, you are keeping it a secret!

I have one shooting 230OTM, I feel confident in it and when Brian Litz claimed it has more first round hits at 1 mile than any other cartridge he has seen, WELL? you decide.....
I have a 6.5x47 too :D

if you feel you need more dump than the 230, try the 338NM with 300gr ...LOL you better have one hell of a heavy and sturdy tgt! I saw that combo bounce the massive 1k steel at 1k and knock chips off rocks when I was shooting 208Amax. and making dust and noise.i like the 230 and 210 much muck better than the 208s

Do you have the standard 300 Norma or an improved version? I am really wanting some dummy cartridges of the 300 Norma and improved versions to help me think through my selection process.

I have a .30-338Norma Improved 30°
This is a necked down FF load, and fired case...

The Improved case adds ~5-6gr usable capacity to an already badazz .300Norma Mag.
My Improved cases have 110.0gr H2o capacity

Been waiting on a nice buck to show to launch a 215Hybrid at, but haven't seen one.
Will prolly take a doe in the 6-800yd range next weekend. With a predictable wind, that is almost an 'easy' shot for the big .30 cal Norma Imp.. It is phenomenally accurate & consistent!
My LR hunting ground...

Its up to you if you wanna do the 'work' and shell out the expense for an Improved version? I did my wildcat for the 'cool factor', but the improvement is tangible as well.
Whidden made me a custom bushing FL sizer die off the reamer print. And had my 'smith ream out a Forster .300Norma seater die with the reamer. These custom dies makes beautifully straight cases!

Have fun deciding!!!

Was thinking of a 300 NM, but have heard of brass issues for the Norma brass after
2-3 firings. (Primer pockets getting loose.) Rethinking the 30 Nosler cause of that.
I know your gunna say all Nosler brass is made by Norma. I was told That is NOT
the case on ALL of their offerings. (Tech from Nosler) I got my 7 SAUM brass from
Nosler a few years ago. It has not acted like any of the stuff I've tried from Norma.
I've got 4 reloads on some and it's holding up real well.
Any real world reports of brass life on the 300 Norma?

I am on my 4th (2 boxes 50) but I am not blowing fire out the end of the barrel either, if I need to go faster, I would get a bigger case or longer barrel. 230OTM/2900fps. 208Amax/3080fps.

Good to know, Norma brass good to go?

If you don't try to make a standard 300 Norma run as fast as a Improved version then the brass will last a while. Running a 230 over 3000fps in a standard 300 Norma will mean really short brass life. My improved is insanely accurate at 3045fps with 230's and it's loafing along at that speed. I can run well over 3100fps but the accuracy goes to .5 MOA or more and the brass life suffers.

Why not just a 300RUM? 208's running 3300fps good nosler and norma brass out there sounds like a win win to me.
