Pillar Bedding Savage 12FV

I have pillar bedded a few Remingtons. Is there a trick to doing the Savage? The rear pillar has a step in it to accommodate the blind, single stack magazine. Do you form the pillars out of a bedding compound, such as Marine Teck, or make them out of tubing? I do not have a lathe but do have a drill press. Suggestions for my .223? This would be for a new Boyd's laminated stock, if it ever gets here.

You're can purchase some aluminum stock that is roughly the correct diameter for what you are looking to do (both ID and OD). Search on the internet and you'll find some...

Cut it to the overall length you need, and break out your file and file in the step that you need.

Be sure to rough up the outside of the pillars you make to give the epoxy something to bite to. There are good instructions here that. will give you the details you need to know about bedding...just search the site.

No trick to it. You will need to cut the rear pillar for the trigger

Hope you take lots of pictures and post 'em here. I have a FV 12 223 as well. LOL GL on the job. Might check out savageshootersdotcom, betting someone has already done this numerous times and posted it there.

Lamp rod works great

I pillar bedded my Savage 12f in a Boyd's stock with good results, however I do have a lathe, so no problem shaping them up.

My action is a single shot target action with three action screws but it still needed the cut away pillar near the trigger.

One thing about bedding the Savage, it's recommended that the tang is free floating.

Here's my action (6 BR Shilen match barrel, RB Sav-2 trigger) with the pillars attached.

So you did not use lamp rod. Made your pillars out of aluminum tubing?

No, I turned them out of solid Ali bar, the centre holes are drilled exact size for the action screws. This is a simple job if you know anyone with a lathe. The rear pillar needs to be cut away to clear the trigger box.

I use lamp rods because I do not have a lathe or the skill to turn a pillar if I did. Certainly a trued and turned pillar will have an advantage over a lamp rod somewhat. I use the lamprod.

I am sure that in the past I have seen places that sell the machined pillars..

Here is a great article on bedding by Richard Franklin

I prefer longish 1/8" brass or bronze (if you live near a good Marine Hardware outlet) pipe nipples. They have a thicker wall and a more suitable ID than lamp rods. Cut them to rough length with a hacksaw and trim them to the exact length in a drill press using a file. Be sure to rough up the outside surface.
