Pillar bedding Savage SA...

I'm having some troubles with a couple of short action savage stocks...lenght of screws hole placement is slightly off...I'm thinking pillar bedding can solve these issues ...The rear action screw/pillar needs some serious trimming to fit in with the trigger group...Should I customize the pillar by cutting away part of it or just forget the rear pillar altogether...I have a brownells fiberglass stock with aluminim pillars installed ...This one was right from day one & I can use what I see there to try to duplicate/customize a standard pillar..whats the best way to get a savage action squared up in these aftermarket stocks ??...mike in ct

Mike: Not sure if you are talking "glass" or "wood" stocks. Not really sure if it would make a difference. As far "pillar" bedding, I have installed front only pillars with good results. The rear pillar would have to be custom made to clear the trigger assembly. As you know, the wood or glass behind the trigger doesn't have a lot of area to work with so I just went with the front pillar. Tape the back of the barrel about 1 1/2" to 2" ahead of the recoil lug, thick enough for the amount of clearence you want in the barrel channel. Punch the hole for the pillar and make sure you have enough room for the front screw to line up in the pillar. I secure the front pillar with a screw that will hold the pillar to the action. The back screw can act as a pivot till the pillar sets up in the bedding. Goop the front pillar and drop the action in the stock. About 6 wraps of masking tape worked to secure the action to the stock. Check it when it has set up. After you're happy with the fitting of the front pillar and you have enough clearence for the barrel, you can go back and rebed the action. Thats the way I did mine. HTH. Mike.
