California ?

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. The mag has to be attached to the rifle in such a way as to require a tool to remove it. By my memory, which is a little shaky these days.

Actually it is legal if you have a California compliant muzzle device. A regular flash hider is not legal, Springfield has the proper one. Also limited to 10 round magazines. The M1A does not have a pistol grip so that has helped it squeak by to this point. If you are in CA you can still buy one but I would not wait. More changes coming in the Assault Weapon nomenclature.

Thanks for the reply watercam. What is this muzzle device? A Brake or something else?

You do not need a "muzzle device". The flash hider will do if the "bayonet lug" portion is removed. Yah, that's California for ya. Pretty STUPID isn't it? But, it's one of the "evil" things that makes the M1A an assault weapon.
Remove that lug and it's no longer an assault weapon. Go figure.

When in doubt, buy one within the state or call Springfield and ask them what needs to change. No you do not need a muzzle device (what they provide is a brake instead of a flash hider) at all.

If you BUY it outside of the state and bring it in, you have broken the law. When you go to register it they will keep it and arrest you for trafficking. As said above, just buy it in the State.

To add one additional thing to what has already been stated above, you do have the option of having it modified by an out of state gunsmith and made compliant prior to shipping it across the CA state line. Although you may occasionally find some smiths that are not willing to mess with anything going to CA, there are also many that do so regularly. I purchased a Sig556 via Gunbroker and the seller's shop gunsmith made the necessary modifications to make it CA compliant prior to shipment. Not that big of a deal in my case. It might take a few phone calls, but I'm guessing you can find someone out of state that will take care of it if you don't find what you're looking for in-state.

So California just announced an attempt at banning all semi auto's ,ammo bans, magazine bans include grandfathered mags and guns. Cant own over 500 rounds of ammo. Look it up.

Most of this is not even remotely true. We can own all the ammo we want. Semis are legal just can't hold over 10 rounds. "Assault" weapons need to be registered or have a legal bullet button mag release. They are trying to take away any mags over 10 rounds. Things are bad enough here we don't need any extra internet fud.

Regarding assault weapons (as defined by CA bizzare reasoning), you must register one if you have one, by January 1, 2018. You can buy one in CA up through December 31, 2016. After that, none on the shelves, but expect there will be some with the "grip wrap". You see, if you cannot get your thumb around to the other side of the grip, then what was an assault weapon, now is not. No, I am not making this up. I have little doubt that such a grip modification will soon be outlawed as well, just like the bullet button was with recently signed legislation.

At present, there is no CA limit on how many rounds of ammo you can have, purchase, unless your local munipality has a limit. However, with gun ammo permits and recording of ammo sales now coming into effect (signed into law), it will be easy for CA to see who is buying how much of what and impose a limit. They already impose limits on handguns (one every 30 says max), so ammo limits are in my opinion, inevitable, even if ammo is a consumable and a handgun is not.

To those who reload and are wondering..., CA law is unclear on whether ammo includes reloading components. There is at least one section of CA law that suggests reloading components may be included. But, unclear.

Show me where I can't own over 500 rounds of ammo.

Some guys would rather regurgitate BS as if it were fact rather than spend 30 seconds on Google to see if it's true.

The ammo limit has been discussed for some years, in CA, but has never made it into legislation. It would be impossible to track, since consumption is not known. But, IF there was a limit, of say 500 rounds, then you could never buy more than 500 at a time, something that would not surprise me coming out of this police state. And now that CA will know how much you buy and when, very easy to implement.
