1000 yard IBS agg Match

Guys it's about being consumed with desire to be there, not being on the outside looking in. Any one one of us that were involved in the beginning knows what I mean. The IBS started with two clubs and an ax to grind with my good friends from up North. The rivalry between the three clubs, two organizations drove the enthusiasm which created the envy of the shooting world. Can we get back to that, probably not. That only happens once in the life of anything. The fuel that drove us was we had technology to explore, competition, occasionally friendly, to engage in and we enjoyed beating up on each other following a friendly poker game the night before. The good old days are never quite the same. Take very good care of your current shooters. It requires an exponential amount of effort to recruit a replacement. As an example I've been working on getting back shooting again. New barrels ,bullets etc. What am looking forward to at the Nationals, besides kicking Mike Wilson's ass, the pig picking Saturday night. Nuff said.

1st - I'd like to point out an obvious, there is already two IBS-1000yd aggregate formats to pick from, set forth in the current rules. And of course there is the Shoot-off format as well. So any IBS sanctioned range already has the choice and option to shoot aggregates (which some are, or have) or the conventional Shoot-Off format. It's each ranges own choice !.!.!

2nd - the numbers are down, which means we have lost shooters and ranges. Why is that? So maybe part of what should be focused on when trying to get the numbers up, is not solely how to attract new shooters but also how to get back the ones we've lost that have stopped attending.
I personally know of a few who stopped attending because of rule changes and/or rule enforcement issues, and would like to express warning to the fact that further rule changes could drive more existing shooters away.

3rd - There was/is a AR-15/semi-auto set of rules in place and procedures for them to shoot at existing matches. For those wanting to attract tactical, and other AR15/semi-auto type crowds, bare this in mind that there is/was already established rules and procedures to do so, and should contact the IBS about that possibility. It just never went over at all when it was put in place, and "has slipped through the cracks" since.

No one wants to see more shooters on the range than me! As a range operator I literally have spent more money, blood, sweat and tears on the range than most. I have seen all disciplines and competed in several. When I bring ammo back from a match if it shot good just missing the cut I will take it to the next match. If it did not preform well I will rework it. I take it apart piece by piece and try to see where i messed up. I have learned a lot this way. There is only one way to win and that is to shoot beter. It takes time to hone the skills for long range shooting. I personally do not want an award for anything other than winning but that has to do with the era I grew up in. No body likes to loose but this is not the movies and we are going to loose more than we win. I shoot simply because I love shooting. Shooting more might be fun but shooting more and not winning only wears out barrels and reinforces bad pratices. For benchrest shooting I never practice. I am fortunate to have a place to test with a low round count. If you go to all agg matches trying to win shooter of the year you will need at least too rebarrel every season if not more. Most ranges I've been to are open at least on Friday more can be shot then. If there is anyone that wants to come to my range all they have to do is call me and arrange a time and if they want I'll help them the best I can. New shooters need to seek out more experienced shooters for help and the more experienced shooters will help. I'm also concerned about the operations cost for the range. I know we can operate on nothing less than what we take in now. If it does not cover all cost then we would not be able to shoot.

Last match at Williamsport,77 LG. shooters……. jim
Match 6 light gun was 72 shooters, match 5 heavy gun was 55 and match 6 was 52 shooters. My point is that shooters numbers are off by 30% or so. The real question is what can we do to make better for all and increase the number of shooters.

Larry -
First off you better look for IBS-1000 match results for Minnesota, not Wisconsin (no IBS1000 in Wisconsin).
Next, there was a Doug Bell who shot the 2nd day only of the 2-day "IBS-1000 Minnesota State Match" at GRRC at Harris, MN this past weekend. From the results I see Doug Bell won a LT-Gun Relay for Score, which qualified him to the Shoot-Off in Score, which he also won!.!.!
In the IBS, patches are given out for Shoot-Off winners, from the IBS. The trophies that GRRC awarded were for the entire 2-day event, and since your friend Doug only shot 1 of the 2-days, his totals were not good enough to win the bigger award prizes. But he did put on a very good showing for only participating the 1 day and for being his first ever IBS-1000 match !.!.! Bet he had fun and can sure be proud of his accomplishment.

My congratulations go out to Doug Bell.....
As well as Doug Tweed, who took home the big wood for winning the Championship.

Larry....Doug is not new to shooting and has been involved in the shooting sports for years. These are the easiest guys to recruit to a new venue because they are long over the start up cost of getting into it and most likely already have most of what they will need to compete.

Did I say he was new . All he didn't buy new was the action . His first shoots I gave him a gun. He is very good at shooting but at rim fire . 1000 Yards is far different .

Every BR Rim-fire shooter I know/saw that tried out LR Benchrest all seem to do well right out of the gate. Think they may know more about reading conditions then many center-fire shooters ("Radar" being one of them...... lol).
And they know what competition shooting is all about.

Unless the results are wrong, it was 77 in light gun in match 6 all shooting disciplines are down check some of the trap clubs….. jim
I think we've gotten off track here a bit, the question at hand was what will bring more shooters. Since you have such a huge crowd why don't you ask around and find out what keeps them from attending the ibs 1000 shoots elsewhere.

What if we increase the prizes for shoot off winners? I know this would be range specific? But lets face it there are normally only a hand full of shooters that are going for shooter of the year or even IBS points for that matter compared to the whole playing field. So most people are there to shoot and have a good time. But look at it like this, We spend 3,000+ on a gun and countless hours of reloading and testing to win a $10 wooden plaque and a .50 cent relay pin. So if the prizes where better, say a box of bullets, can of powder or gift card I don't know? Might get more interest??
Thoughts??
