OT: Beagles

Rick in Oregon

Gold $$ Contributor
We just lost our last beloved Basset Hound Lucy yesterday. She made it just past 14 years old and died peacefully with my wife and myself at her side comforting her passage. We sure did love that old hound dog.

Lucy last year:

Anyway, and the reason for this OT post: I'm getting too old to continually pick up 70 lb. hound dogs, and are now considering a pair of Beagles for our next pups. However I understand there are three "sizes" of this breed, and knowing nothing about them, figured I'd ask the crew here, as this group seems to be well educated and versed in a wide range of subjects. And I know that many here are dog lovers.

We're wanting the smallest version of Beagles, and if anyone knows about this, or better yet, can point us to a reputable breeder, we'd sure appreciate any assistance.

Lucy, rest in peace my little puppy-girl. Thanks you guys.

Sorry to hear about your puppy-girl, Rick. My wife and I lost one of our Giant Schnauzers (Bacon N Eggs) last year.

RIO - sorry for your loss. Know that Max, a.k.a. "Super Mutt", was at the Rainbow Bridge to guide Lucy the rest of the way.

image.jpeg Rick sorry. It's tuff to see them go. We have two beagles Right now. we have two 13 inch and lost are 15 inch about a year ago after 15 years. I believe that 13 and 15 is the standards for the bread. There about as hard headed of a dog as I've seen. But they mind well for treats. I really like the 13" my self. Really can't help point you to a good breeder in your area. depending how far you are willing to go to get one. I can ask the wife the name of the breeders we got are newest one from as l can't remember. I'm in Ut.

Sad day. Sorry to hear. My father raised Beagles when I was a kid. Great dogs but they are runners. One, Brutus, would disappear for days at a time. We have two long haired miniature Dachsunds, a Red Retriever and an Irish wolfhound. The Dachsunds are great lap dogs , loyal, friendly and good "door bells". They also don't eat much. Good luck with what ever you choose. Josh

Sorry for your loss....dogs are such loyal companions and true friends. I have two Mastiffs and for the breed they are getting up there in the years. They never get close at all to your 14 years.

Rick:

I am so sorry for your loss. Dogs have been a huge part of my family life and the wife and I consider them our children. Embrace the memories. As to Beagles we have a 15" that I just love. The 13" sounds like where you want to go. There are even some legit mini Beagles out there. A Google search of breeders in your area will help you out.

God bless you and Lucky,
Jim Hardy

I have affiliations with a few true beagle show dog breeders. If you are looking for a Westminster quality dog give me a ring or pm..... Just so you know. They aren't cheap but man they are gorgeous :)

Greg.

My parents had a small girl beagle Heidi. She was a "Lemon" beagle I think. She was small and only white and tan, no black. Might be what you're looking for. Or like their other dog Nemo, you could always ask around for a pair of runts from the litter. He is a little SOB but probably only 10-12" to the top of his head.

Here is the business phone number for our Schnauzer breeder, Sylvia Hammarstrom:
(707) 795-9785

She can probably lead you to a reputable breeder. She is located in Northern CA, and is a world renowned breeder.

A sincere thanks for all who offered comfort, support and kind words after my loss of Lucy. Especially to those who sent information on breeders to replace my little buddy. I'll be following up on all leads sent.

It appears in this cadre of serious shooters, there is also a large group of folks with loving hearts......those would be the dog lovers, and I thank you all. :)

Rick I feel your pain.
What I did was go to a online rescue site, found the one we liked and the rest is history. Very reasonable price wise and you are saving a life at the same time.

I have owned many dogs, and I cry every time one has to be put down, so I share your sorrow.

In my youth, I raised and loved hunting with small 12-13 inch class beagles. I bought one out of houndsandhunting.com magazine. You might want to do a search.
