From boys to men with a beagle

Well I had a surprise visit last Sunday that made me proud so I thought I would share it.
It started about twelve years ago when my lovely wife set me up. I live on a busy rural road in Mystic Ct so I was always against having a dog so I wouldn’t have to deal with it being hit on the road. Well I had always told her that if we ever did it would be a beagle. So the first week of January my son’s birthday he comes to me and said he had saved up enough money and had found a dog he wanted to buy. I hemmed and hawed then asked him what kind of dog he was looking at. He looked at his mother smiled and told me it was a beagle. I new I had been set up and had. So we went and looked at the dogs. She latched onto him immediately so I gave in. The best decision I could have made looking back. Now realize that I know nothing about training a hunting dog. So I started doing some research and was very fortunate to meet and become very good friends with an old Italian fella who graciously shared his vast knowledge of hunting beagles with me. 46DE2ADF-A3FC-43D8-A6EE-1B4FC97EA80E.jpegSo then two years later on his birthday with his new hunting license he shot his first rabbit. I had collared up the dogs and sent him on ahead to put them in the brush while I finished getting my gear on. I heard the dogs open up right away then just as I locked the doors to the car I heard the shot then “I got him”. The picture on the top right was his first rabbit. So as years went bye we did our fair share of hunting the dogs together.A4B4A6B5-7002-4122-A69E-E2AD9E6A4D3D.jpeg Well as he got older we butted heads quite a bit. I was trying to make a man out of him and not always doing a very good job of it. But from time to time we would 96856D86-41D8-4DB7-82F4-F1A62FE98800.jpegalways go hunting together. Well he came home last weekend and asked me if we could go hunting. He is now 24 years old and employed as a lineman for the Block Island power company. Now tomorrow I will get to meet my first grandchild thanks to him. So I guess my point to this story is that I had no idea what I was doing with the dogs or my son but it has worked out. I contribute the success to the hunting and the dogs. To this day I always make it a point to go out of my way to take new kids out hunting with the dogs. The kids are great I could tell you stories about them for days!!! I’m a very blessed man all because I was setup by my loving wife.

This was on Sunday with his grandfather’s Browning A-5. I hunt with my grandfather’s Stevens side bye side 20ga. It was a very enjoyable day especially when he missed the first one . In the earlier photo with the three young boys he is on the left his buddy in the center is now a union heavy equipment operator. The boy on the right now operates his own land clearing and excavation business. Now all successful men that I’m proud to know. They even look you in the eye when they shake your had.
Take care all and I pray you have a merry Christmas.

Well I had to do a lot of training with our dogs but not how to run a rabbit. Had to make sure they wouldn’t run off game and handle well in the woods. We never use a leash. Unfortunately Ct doesn’t have many large tracks of land, so I have to be able to call my dogs off the rabbit when he takes them to property we don’t have permission to hunt or get close to a road. So I tell them when to hunt and when I say all done they quit. My Italian friend told me it couldn’t be done then I showed him. He was quite surprised.

My beagle got a three minute intro to rabbits. Two car cement block garage. One little beagle, one big ol rabbit I grabbed up in a Hav-a-hart trap. Tossed em both in on a closed garage door. Rabbit went out a broken window! Dog chased rabbits all her life.

One of my uncles raised Beagles for a few years. Being a farmer, the Beagles had lots of room to run and plenty of rabbits to chase.

In my opinion, the best reason to chase rabbits was to have:

German Rabbit Stew (Hasenpfeffer)

;)

Many enjoyable memories from my childhood and early 20s rabbit hunting. It’s been a while since I have been out. I’ve always had beagles and they have always been outside but this one is getting the royal treatment he gets to live inside and I am loving it! He comes from good gun dog stock, and I feel I am letting him down by not hunting him. But it sure is nice having a buddy to come home to every day I think he feels the same. I really enjoyed your write up.414C9201-2065-4BC4-9B4B-819791049E61.jpeg

Got to go a few times visiting my grandparents in Indiana where my dad grew up, his buddy raised beagles near Fort Wayne. So much fun , thank for the memories !

My uncle Billy Joe Ingram always had a bunch of beagle's he used to take me when he ran them in the mountains, i loved it.

Man your post stirs the memories!
Our house always had at least a couple Beagles growing up. We hunted each Saturday.
You say you trained your dogs to be called off a trail? You're a better dog trainer than I my friend.
Thanks for the post and stirring old memories. I might need to go find a tissue now
