Midwest Palma Championship / no E-Targets?

Jay Christopherson

I heard a rumor that the Electronic Targets are not going to be used for the Midwest Palma Championship at Lodi.

If that's the case, I'd be curious to hear what the reasoning was - I think everyone who plans to be there for the F-Class nationals this year was sort of looking at the MPC as a bellwhether... maybe it's just as simple as the system is still being exercised and wasn't quite ready yet?

I am thinking they are probably so confident in them that they don't need a test run before National's?

In a word, no.

Please keep in mind this installation is cutting edge in scope. It was conceived late last year & unfortunately there hasn't been time or manpower since to run both dedicated AC power AND fiber optic cable to the pits with which to run the SMT system.

Early tests - some during match events - have been done & from the results the decision was made that the installation really needs the dedicated power & bandwidth fiber will provide before it will perform as desired.

These two are scheduled for July the last I heard. There will be more tests & improvements before then, and after.

ah, just logistic stuff then.

Yes, the trencher is sitting there waiting. The spool of power wire is waiting. And everyone is waiting for the fiber optic wire to arrive! It is scheduled to show up until July now. All the trials so far have been run off batteries.

Come on guys, the sky isn't falling. There will be a natls no matter what. I think it's time to start supporting these wonderful people that are tasked with this job. We probably can't imagine the sacrifice they are making to accommodate us.

"These people" are too-well aware of the expectations everyone has for this endeavor, including themselves.

It's come a long way since first being broached as a possibility. I for one don't believe realization of the goal is far off.

For slow-fire events it works pretty well as-is though admittedly there have been problems. For our US-style of NRA rapid-fire - unlike almost anything else done overseas - it's taking more brainstorming to accommodate, given the nature of this kind of "data dump" in such an abbreviated, compressed period.

Dan, his team and the folks at WGC are 'thinking outside the box' to bring us a new level of what we already enjoy.

Experimental may more accurate so since it is not reduced to practice.

Hey Mudeat, why don't you come out and say who you are? You seem to have a real axe to grind over the e-targets at Winnequah, are you a member there?

There was an earlier thread here that ran well off the topic, shut down by the Admins about the time this individual appears to have joined.

My guess - strictly a gut feeling - is that they may have an interest in another ET technology.

Simple - where is it reduced to practice? Not involved with Ets.

Can you please re-phrase one or both so I might make a cogent reply?

I've read both posts several times, can't for the life of me understand the point you're trying to make.

If they're not used for competition events, that's not practice.

If they are, and competitors are accepting of the scores reported, that's not practice.

If you can't state an understandable position / opinion, I'm not wasting any more of my time over your 'contributions' to this thread.

I was looking forward to shooting the ET's for the state LR championship on the 25th & 26th. It should be good practice to shoot the range before nationals to see what it is like, since I haven't been there before.

We've been watching the happenings at Lodi. So what the capital cost running now. I see dedicated wiring in the Butts, conduit and panels. Now trenching in fiber optic.

Is that included in Hermans earlier quotes of around$3500? Does this fiber optic wiring also fit within this budget?

Whether it be E targets or taking my turn in the pits, I am very much looking forward to heading north to Lodi in a few days and shooting all week!

Heman's contributions here quoted $3,500 as the cost per target for the single target systems used at Atterbury. They have seven individuals who bring their personal systems to the base ranges for matches.

The system at WGC (Lodi) is fundamentally different in that it's a dedicated installation for all the now 32 targets as a complete, permanent integrated system.

I am a club member at WGC, I do NOT work for SMT.

I'm focused on helping the club achieve the goals they've established for the members and participants in the activities they host.

I do own a G2 SMT system as of late last year. I bought it for practice sessions at the various ranges I can use, as well as to share with when friends - and stangers - are around for those sessions.

Hopefully no one reading this will believe that constitutes a conflict of interest.

Steve, HeMan, and all the folks at WGC,

I for one think it is fantastic the amount of effort you are putting into the E-Targets. As a mass spectrometrist for more than 20 years, I have seen the development of instruments go from having to plug in cables and communicate using Linux, and barely getting data sometimes to being able to have a near-idiot accurately measure mass of a molecule to 4 decimal places.

I think that e-targets are similar in that it is going to take a lot of time, effort and patience to get them 'up and running'. I also think that the rest of us 'later adopters' will owe you 'early adopters' a debt of gratitude for all your work. By the time you are done, we will all have a resource to fall back on as to what works and what doesn't.

My hat is off to the WGC crew and the Atterbury Crew. Just wish I could get out there and shoot on them sometime!

Frank

There are now 7 privately owner SMT G2 target at Ben Avery in Phoenix and they have worked well. I think there are 2 more on order. Most of the struggle has been operator error on the different devices viewing the targets on line. I know it not the same system that is being permanently installed at Lodi, but they have been well liked by all who have shot on them.

Heck look at Dan Bramley and his success at the Emerald Cup he has shot SMT electronic since the first of the year. Must be close enough to help him win.
