No Redding Competition Neck Sizing Set for the 6.5x47 Lapua?

Thank you. I knew that they made the Type S Matching Bushing Die Set. I was referring to the Competition Bushing Neck Die Set like this set for the 6.5x284 Norma which is 749-008-299WS . I may just weight till I get a few pieces of fired brass from the chamber and buy a Redding Seater and a Harrell's Precision Full Length Sizer, and plain Type S Neck Sizing Die. I spoke with Robin Sharpless and it went much the same way as with Scott... In short, according to him, there are not enough 6.5x47 Lapua Rifles built, nor enough 6.5x47 Lapua brass made, for them to go through the extensive and expensive process that is involved in producing that Comp Neck Die. Things went downhill when I expressed dismay that "Lapua could not keep up with demand on producing 6.5x47 Lapua Brass. I had purchased 1,000 cases earlier this week and by the time my order was filled the vendor was out of brass." To which Sharpless replied that "There are times of year when you can't get .32 H&R Brass either....". I started laughing at that point and asked if I could quote him on that. He went on to explain that he had been in the industry for 30 years and basically knew everything there was to know. He sits on NRA Commissions, knows everyone, etc... I thanked him for taking the time to talk to one of the common people and frankly hung up as my tolerance for him had peaked with the smartass .32 H&R comment...

I started off with Forster Ultra Seating Dies and to them I shall return. I believe I will wait for a piece of brass from my chamber and go with a Harrell's Sizer...

I've run into institutional arrogance, however, I don't think I have ever run into quite this level of it. Usually when you get to the top of the food chain folks are more likely to cater to the client. Not here...

I would have to believe they know that they couldn't sell enough neck sizing dies to make it worth their trouble. Almost nobody neck sizes anymore so it would be a tough sell. Matt

Its stories like this that makes me continue to use Forster dies. I once sent them an email asking if they could make a custom 7.62x54r die. Not a very common product and no one shoot competitively with it. Yet their president called me and not only accommodation me in every way for my needs but also asked my advice on that particular market! Wow.way better hen Redding.
Tried to get a custom die from Redding once and will not do that again. It took 4 months to get it and they charged twice what Forster does and when the die got here it exhibited almost .004 of runout.
 
As long as whidden is in business youll be able to get exactly what you want with people glad to help you. Not sure if they make neck dies but i know they stock the FL dies for that cal. Like matt said theres very very few people that are looking for a neck die anymore so i can understand redding not tooling up to make one- but the talking down to you was completely uncalled for i think. Nobody deserves that

Btw, I think I am going with a Full Length bushing die from Harrell's which is not custom, but certainly better than factory, having a 1 in 8 chance of coming close to your chamber. I wonder if the Harrell brothers know how little 6.5x47L brass is actually made? I am going to keep this "secret" piece of information under my proverbial hat lest Harrell's, Forster, or Whidden find out what an arcane cartridge they are producing dies for...

I have Redding to thank for causing me to switch to Forster and Whidden. After owning dozens of Redding dies, a few years back it came time to order a 338 Norma Die that I was advised was not available at the time. After a lengthy conversation with Redding and no police report for the theft they tried to pull on me for them to make a custom die, I went elsewhere.
Then comes the insult to injury, three week later the die I was looking for was listed. So I called Redding back and spoke with the gentleman who didn't help me the first time and let him know where he could get the die they don't make:(
On a good note I have found most in the precision shooting industry are extremely knowledgeable of their products.
 
Buy the Redding Body die ($28) and send it to Jim Carstenson with $80, 10 pieces of 3x fired brass and he will make a custom honed FL bushing die in about 2 weeks.

You could truly knock me over with a feather. I received a call about an hour ago from a VERY POLITE Engineer from Redding Reloading who called to let me know that the engineering section had reviewed my request on the 6.5x47 Lapua cartridge. He called to let me know they would be FULLY supporting the 6.5x47 Lapua Cartridge across the board and specifically offering the Competition Neck Sizing Set that I had originally requested. He also made it a point to THANK ME for bringing the lack of coverage for the 6.5x47 Lapua to their attention and he took my e-mail down in order to keep me in the loop on progress...

He was exceptionally polite, as was I, and took the time to make the point it would not have been brought to their attention without my efforts. I doubt that, however, it was very courteous of him to say.

You could say that I was/am more than a little surprised after my last conversation with Sharpless. The world renowned ."32 H&R" expert amongst other honors, commissions, letters, and degrees so advanced, the layman cannot even conceptualize...

I was just posting the link that was mentioned about so that it was easy to get to and see what was really being offered.

I bought 50 rounds of Factory 6.5x47 Lapua for my new build, am going to shoot it and send 5 cases with my reamer print to Whidden to have custom dies made. Have already talked to them and have been impressed so far by them and all that I have heard from all the guys on this site.

I just want to mention that I think we may be giving Redding a lack of a tip of the collective hat on their response to the 6.5x47 Lapua. I am not in any way short selling the smartass responses I received from both the underling and then from Robin Sharpless who, humorously enough, is actually tasked as part of his job to deal with the public. THAT BEING SAID the Engineers DID look at the request, and the 6.5x47 Lapua question in general, and they choose to support it across the board with the entire product line. They also followed the original request up by getting back in touch with me to let me know their decision and the previously mentioned thank you. The one thing I DON"T WANT TO SEE is a company to respond positively, granted after two piss poor starts, and still get a bloody nose for their effort. That would seem to set a bad precedent for future interaction. I have no question that Redding is monitoring this forum and for my part I am letting the negative portion of that experience go... I had been happy with Redding up to this point, and short those two conversations, am still happy with their service. I am up for giving everyone a second chance and for a rather large company, by industry standards, they have moved rather rapidly... Take this for what it was intended. Just food for thought...

Btw, I still plan to buy a Forster Ultra Seater and a Harrell Brother's Sizer based on a few pieces of brass to matched up to one of their 8 different dies for the best fit. That said I am happy to see Redding respond positively...
