**Redding Type S FL dies, Bushing size? For 6.5x47 lapua

Hey Guys,

I am thinking about getting the redding type s FL die set for 6.5x47 lapua

What size titanium bushing are you guys running??

I am going to run a standard 6.5x47

Not planning on turning neck or any of that jazz

thanks!!!

No turn chamber with Lapua brass you would probably be OK with a .288 and maybe even a .289 along with a .290

That is based on you having a .2950 or .2945 chamber

True story...if you only could pick one then get the 289.

0.289/288" are good 'uns for "relatively" new brass. If ya' shoot alot… and don't anneal (e.g.… "all that jazz' ;) ) adding an 0.287 bushing could be useful, compensates for springback on "well-used" cases.

JC,
My rifle has a .293" neck and I have had good results with a .288", uncoated bushing on unturned necks. My .288", coated bushing seems to leave the necks a little tighter. As far as your smith's reamer; I recommend adding .040+" to the freebore unless you intend to run light/short bullets.

.293 is getting close in the event you have brass with thick necks... not saying it can't be done but measuring and monitoring need be in place if you don't have plans to skim cut the necks.

.264" + .0140" + .0140" = .292" that leaves you one thousands clearance for expansion. If some necks come in at .0135" no biggie but if some come in at .0145" that could be very detrimental to both accuracy and your health .

Remember , brass flows forward so if today with new brass until cut you have clearance that's not to say next week after having 4 firings on them you'll have the same clearance.

With regards to the free bore it is a generic one that is suited to lighter bullets , not saying you couldn't shoot 140 class bullets with it but they would be deep in the case and would therefore not give the optimum velocities one might think possible.

I should add that my last 6.5x47 was with one of Kiffs reamer spec'd at .2930" nk .175" FB 1°-30 and I can if I measure and sort use no turn brass but I chose to do a light cleanup and give myself a bit of room.

This reamer was chosen to specifically utilize 130-140 class bullets with a bit of room left to set the barrel back once.
good luck.

OK, looks like I am leaning towards buying a reamer to match up with what i want shooting the 130 JLK bullets. Similar to the berger 130 vlds.

fromdave kiff at pac tool and guage, what will I want to buy my smith? Any recommendations are appreciated!!

Tell Dave what you're trying to accomplish. He'll recommend a reamer.

You DO NOT buy your gunsmith anything.

You buy the reamer for your ownership. They're only about $138.00. I own two. You loan it to your gunsmith to perform the chambering job. He returns it to you when he's done.

That way it stays nice and sharp for your needs only. You don't want him to turn your reamer into a worn out reamer using it on other's jobs.

I run a .2930" with a .198" FB specifically set up for 140's. The .175" FB is a great set up for 130-140 weight bullets but I was only interested in 140 hybrids and not worried about more room to chase the lands. I wanted to hit the upper node and it works perfectly. No neck turn is fine in this chamber but as stated it can be close, my loaded rounds are .2900 and I did have a few thick pieces that caused a slight flyers.

As for neck tension, rule of thumb for me is there is no rule of thumb. My BR likes very light tension my 6.5L sucked into one hole when I bumped it up to what would be considered heavy or excessive to some. Get a few bushings and see what it likes, just part of load development.
