No flame here! The 284 or something else very close that also has good brass, moderate recoil and equal or better inherent accuracy. I can't think of many, if any, that have everything that the 284, or some version of it, has going for it. Even for short range, I think good bullet availability is the only thing holding a smaller 7mm, such as 7br or 7x47 back. I strongly feel that overall accuracy and cartridge efficiency with a given parent case, only improve with a larger bore. Of course, so does recoil, as bullet weights increase. Whatever the discipline, good components and good barrels will always be a huge factor in what is "best". For long range, it's pretty much impossible to beat the 7mm's in this regard...not so much for short range, though.Regular 284 Winchester is as good as any.
Now watch the opinions flare. You need a quality gun and set-up to bring out that little bit more a quality shooter can get from most anything.
