223 8 twist

Hi guys,
I will end up with both 8twist and 7twist already had the 8 so thats whats going on first when the 7 comes I will get that chambered so my bases are covered.
The reamer has 100 freebore recomended by smith whats your opinions on freebore.

Cheers Trev.

My freebore is .064". It will fit the 75 grain Amaxs perfectly in a Lapua case. The boat tail/bearing surface junction is right above the neck/shoulder junction of the case. It also fits in a AICS magazine too. .100 freebore is pretty long in my opinion. That would be good for the 80's. You wont be able to use a AICS mag though. Well you could but your bullet jump will be long. I will post pics of a loaded case later when I have time.

Hi trev, I have used a .071 and a .169 freebore reamer. From now on I'm going to use the .169 reamer for 80's. The reason I like the .169 is it allows more case capacity and I get lower pressures.

With that said I still wouldn't hesitate to use a , .100 freebore reamer for the 80's. my 223's 24.7 gr. Varget with the .071 freebore gets about 2885fps. I have about 9 reloads on the brass and the primer pockets are still tight and the primer corners are almost completely round. At 25.1 gr. I was oy getting 65fps faster and I think after three reloads I could feel the pockets loosening up and the primers were flat. So even with. 029 less freebore I was still getting good performance.

boltman223,
Thanks you for your reply the smith has a 169 freebore reamer aswelll may have another chat with him may get the 7twist done with the 169 and the 8 twist with the 100 freebore.
Can always extend freebore in the 8twist if need be but sounds like it be ok soon see after xmas is over with.

Cheers Trev

No almost bought a 6.5 twist barrel today just because I have a good supply of 90smk local pretty cheap. Just don't need another 30" barreled rifle laying around

There's nothing wrong with an 8 Twist. I shoot a JP 223 with an 18" barrel using the 80 grain sierras and I believe 23.0 grains of Varget. This rifle just hammers.

Here's a 5 shot group at 200 yards and at the time was only the 3rd five shot group from the rifle after the break in procedure.

I shot neck in neck with a custom rifle at 300 yards shooting tums with this rifle.

Here's the rifle.

JamesnTn, nice shooting. Are your mags standard length? I have a Rock River heavy barrel that is also an 8 twist that i want to play with at LR. I have 67 Sierra and Berger70 vld I am gonna start with. Hoping the Sierras shoot as good. I am less than 2 hours from the factory and can get blems much cheaper.

Thanks Ron for the compliment. Yes the mags are standard length. I use the standard GI mags you can get from brownells for like 6-7 bucks. I just seat my bullet as long as I can and still function properly with the mags. The 77's from Sierra are designed specifically for magazine length AR's

Have you tried seating the bullet out to the lands? May not fit mag, but could use a follower and shoot single shot just for groups.

If you see the groups I've posted from my ARbi really don't think I can improve any better on it as it shoots now. I'm happy with the tune and being able to shoot tums at 300 yards and hit them shot after shot.

stinnett1981,
The rifle will be used as a single shot for fclass.

Thanks for the reamer print nice groups there aswell I havnt shot the 80.5 bergers yet been playing around with the nosler 80s the rifle seems to be shooting ok havnt done any real load work up been busy doing other things.
I loaded up some cases with 24gr 2208 your varget bullet seated 5 thou it grouped ok at 600 vertical was good just need to tighten up the horizontal spread.

Cheers Trev.

How many shots per case are you getting from the 80.5's at 2860? I was getting ejector marks and loose primer pockets using the amax after only two or 3 loads to get them to shoot well. Never really felt comfortable pushing them that hard. I know a lot of guys do though. Especially when shooting out to 1000. i often hear those guys switch to other calibers and wish they had a long time ago. I only group shoot out to 300 to test loads then shoot half size ipsc targets Out to 750. I I try the 1050 yard range but its past 750 is a waste. I run my creedmore further.
