Cooling down the bore.

Anyone ever messed around with small fans for coolind down your bore?
I was thinking of taking a funnel and gluing in a fan from an old computer to stick into my action and cool the chamber and barrel down faster between shooting.

Something I use is a simply Fish Tank air pump I bought at a local Pet Shop. It comes with a plastic tube you can stick into the throat of your barrel and is powered by two D Cell batteries. I use it primarily at summer time when the barrel gets warmer quicker. Cheap way to help "cool" a barrel.

Be careful cooling a barrel if done to rapidly can increase fire cracking. And accelerate wear and shorten barrel life. Due to rapid heating and cooling.

I prefer after shooting my relay to let my barrel cool on it's own. The chemical works much better when the barrel is warm. Run a wet patch, let soak. run a wet patch and soak. It just seems to clean much easier that way. I can usually clean in 3 or 4 wet patches. Then Iosso the throat a few strokes every now and then. Matt

I don't shoot competition any longer, but that's exactly what I did.

I wasn't a benchrester, but a High Power shooter.

I'd let it cool on it's own between relays while I pulled in the pits.

After my last relay, I'd run a couple wet patches through it and let it sit while I did my final pit duty.

Easy, no extra gear/equipment to haul, and low tech enough that even I could keep up with it.

Bryan's BarrelCool™ works great, I've seen his prototype in action.

Two things to note; the unit moves more air than a pump using an impeller rather than a diaphragm.
The design lets it double as an empty chamber indicator as it stays in place in the action - this is great for use on public ranges that have periodic cease-fires for target maintenance.

Bryan is an engineer by trade (in case the 3D modelling and graph didn't tip you off). Low price, American made...should be at SHOT next year.

One thing that appears to have been forgotten. Water does not compress like air. Humidity in the barrel causes two things that are bad. 1. Dents inside the barrel. 2. It causes oxidation on iron molecules in the steel, even on stainless barrels.

Ambient air has humidity in it and condensation occurs. Poring water in hot barrel, well that speaks for itself.

My suggestion is blow out the barrel with nitrogen gas. dry, dissipates humidity, and extremely cold. Comes in tanks that can be regulated easily and relatively inexpensive.

Just wanted to post an update to BarrelCool. We received the first sets of injection molded parts for evaluation. There are some very minor tweaks we want done to the tool and process and we will be running one more small run to make sure the changes we made are to our liking. All in all, the first plastics came out very good. The image below was plasti-dipped yellow since the first sets came in black to better show the quality and imperfections of the injection molded parts. Production units will be in yellow, similar to the tube in the picture. We should be into production by the end of the month, early April and will let everyone know when it is close to ready.

I did some "destructive" testing by dropping the unit from 4 feet and it held up quite well. I also stuck it into an AR-15 and LR-308 and sent the bolt home numerous times with BarrelCool in the action and it held up very nicely as well.

I still want one of these because of the portability. However, I built one using a fish tank pump from Wal Mart, some vinyl tubing from Lowe's and old bore guide I had laying around. Got about $10 in it not counting the bore guide.

Bryan, when will these become available to purchase and do you have a website for ordering them?

BarrelCool is now available for pre-sale and we should be shipping in the next 5-7 days.

Some people have asked what it is made out of. It is an injection molded ABS plastic housing. 7-10 hours of battery life (batteries included) and the tube is Nylon that can be cut to fit your rifle perfectly. Injection molding and manufacturing is done in Fremont, CA.

I've seen people use bait bucket air pumps but can't believe they do much good. The air flow is just too low. You want something that will move as much air as possible.

The website is not working as it will not accept an order.

It looks like IE browser and myabe Firefox has issues with the order processing sire we are using to capture orders. It looks like Safari and Chrome are working with no issues. We are working on this to resolve it.

If you would like to place an order via email, you can message me and I can take care of you. sales@reliantemscorp.com

I placed my order using Firefox this afternoon.

When you fill in the blanks (name, et cetera) you'll not see the letters, but the software is indeed capturing the information. I got an e-mail confirming the order, and everything was correct.
