New Forum / Changes

Perhaps that is why I am having trouble adapting, I don't do Facebook and these formats are foreign to me. Thanks for all your hard work.

I really don't want to be nitpicky ...BUT should the proper word be "started" conversations and NOT starred conversations? I looked for stars but didn't find any.So I'm thinking it's a simple error in proof-reading or some new facebook lingo? I happen to know Zuckerman is an atrocious speller.

Not really liking the new forum, I vote to go back to the old one . Why change is said to be good but seems to be alot more difficulty involved for everyone. ...even the mods.

While it is different and takes some getting used to, there are some nice features but some from the old missing.
Go Up, Go Down are the most obvious IMO and their omission does slow forum users navigation.

Forum Boss stated the old SMF forum was no longer supported:

I don't think they did enough homework on that one.

I'm on another forum ( http://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php ) where they're using SMF V2 software with little or no problems.
Various add-ons and plugins get installed from time to time to enhance the forum.

Change is never liked but with further work and tweaks most will be happy in due course.
Do carry on. ;)

Actually, we did look very carefully at the SMF V2 upgrade option. that would have been a simpler migration to be sure. But basically it was a dead end. SMF is an open source thing supported by volunteers. There really is no professional-grade support at all. Also SMF is not really designed from the ground up as a mobile application at all. Mobile features required "dumbing down" the SMF software. We felt that this was not the direction we wanted to go. Additionally, we could not find "good to go" developers who could help us with our SMF install.

I keep getting "alerts" even after not checking any of the options to initiate alerts.

You can turn alerts off. Click on your user name at the top right. On the light blue frame that appears, Select Personal Details. That opens a big page. On the left side, near the bottom, you will see "Alert preferences". With that you can Turn off all the common Alert triggers.

A lot of us ARE dumb--MYSELF INCLUDED. Don't do facebook--don't know how. dedogs

AVATARs:

In the near future, we will allow registered, contributing users to upload an Avatar (personal photo) for their profile. Currently, while we work out bugs in the database, we have this feature disabled. Pushing out all those thousands of photos puts more strain on the server initially.

"we will allow registered, contributing users to upload an Avatar"

I'm NOT particularly fond of that requirement!

Yep, that's the page I was referring to where I did not check any boxes and hit "Save changes"......still get alerts. So many new bells and whistles to get used to, I just like to keep things simple. Thanks.

Even refreshing the page doesn't make them go away, but eventually they do. It's a bug IMHO.

Thanks for the explanation, it's clearer than what you originally stated:
Overall, regarding change we wish everything could be seamless with no problems. But the situation was that the existing software, SMF, was no longer supported. We looked at all the major Forum software offerings -- all were less than perfect. We picked the one that was the fastest, had the highest security, and the most flexibility.

Boy I usta like this forum but these new changes I don't care for...if it's not broke don't fix it is my theory usually. I offer to buy some bullets over a week ago off the classifieds and I can't figure out how to read my messages as they usta be easily accessible!! Now I prolly got people mad at me... Your Private Messages, now called conversations (because both sides are linked for your convenience) ARE easily located.

To FIND MESSAGE
1. Look at the top of the page, next to your log-in name WildChild.
2. Put your cursor on the link for INBOX. This will display the last conversations (aka PMs)
3. Click the Inbox link to display all conversations.

ok my turn

since the upgrade i get the following intermittent block. I do use a VPN but this did not occur with the previous website. any thoughts...help

Sucuri WebSite Firewall - CloudProxy - Access Denied

Thank you
Trevor

Trevor, we only put Sucuri in place after installing the new software. It has been running on the Main site and Bulletin for a few months. We were getting heavy traffic from China and some other areas that was putting a heavy load on the server. Also there have been DDOS attempts. From your profile, it appears you are in Canada. We have no geo-blocks in effect for Canada. However, it could be that Sucuri is sensing something suspicious about the source of your html requests. This is a complex subject. If you can send IPs via private conversation (on Forum) I will pass that to our Sucuri tech. But I promise nothing. It could well be that your VPN is appearing like a disguised hacker entry which is triggering the denial of access. FWIW, not one other forum member has other raised this issue.
