Zero at 200yds

Might a stupid question. But I'll ask anyway.

Is it possible to sight in a rifle, with scope), 200 yds as your zero, but using 100 yds as your distance to shoot? If so how?

Sure it is. You can zero the scope in at 200, but when you shoot the gun at 100 you'll just be a bit high, maybe an inch or something depending on caliber and load).

If you're shooting for groups you can just leave it high if ya want, or come down on the scope the correct amount.

Most of my rifles I like to zero at 200. My 22-250 and 308 I am about 1' high @ 100, but i leave them alone even when target shooting.

Jonny, need to know the caliber your shooting, bullet weight, muzzle velocity, and the bullets ballistic coefficient, then I can compute how high you should sight in at 100 yds to be on at 200yds. So I guess the answer to your question is yes it can be done, it is still advisable however to check the load at distance if it's possible.

You beat me to it. I figured that Jonny was looking for a simple ballistic table.

BTW, the caliber and bullet weight are not important, or even needed. All I need is the bullet and velocity.

Jonny,

If you want to try it yourself, here's a link. Use the 'Simplified Trajectory' until you get familiar with the programs.

Actually Ray, you are correct, I'm using an old Oehler Ballistic Explorer program and it does ask for bullet weight, however, if all else is equal,,B.C. + Velocity)the trajecory will be the same whether it is a 60Gr. bullet or a 100 Gr. bullet. I'm not a ballistician but I do find this stuff interesting.
