Your prescription for long term storage

Ok, first let me define long term storage. I have a few rifles I pull out of the closet once a year. Don't shoot them but I do give them a heavy cleaning and put them back in storage.

Over the years I have used all kinds of snake oils down the barrel... and all over about everything.

Was almost thinking of using Fluid Film this time around.

So, what's your go to for long term storage??

I put ballistol over everything and put the rifle in a gun sock. I've found that the sock is a really nice breathable barrier to condensation and helps regulate temperature/ moisture.

I have one old shotgun that has never been shot
I break it out of the case about every year to check it
I used Spray Silicon and or Silicon impregnated cloth every wipe down

Still looks new, no rust dots etc

Other than that, I would pump some grease down the barrel if it was long long term storage then patch the grease out when it was wanted to be shot

I use Fluid Film on my cast drill press table and chamber reamers for storage
but those are not long term, they get used fairly regular so I dont know the effects of leaving it on for a year or more for protection

I have guns that I haven't used for years!!! I don't do anything different with them than any other gun. The bores are cleaned when I am done shooting them. The last thing through my bores is a light coat of Kroil. The outside of all my guns gets wiped down with G96 and they are all stored in safes with a golden rod dehumidifier. When I take them out, they look exactly like they did when I put them in there, whether it's been a month or 3 years. Why make it complicated?

I dont do a whole lot. I clean everything not as often as I'd like to. I dont remember the last time I cleaned anything. I dont get em dirty.. but only run a few patches when accuracy tapers out, or here and there.

I keep my safe in air conditioned environment... then have golden rods plugged in inside the safe to keep it warm and dry inside. This has worked for many years just fine.

Spray fogging oil.

I coat my guns with WD Specialist Corrosion Inhibitor or EEzox. Then it goes in a Zerust ziplock gun storage bag. Then it goes into a gun sock that helps squeeze the excess air out of the bag. Into the safe they go until next year’s redo. The process helps refresh my memory of what I have and what doesn’t get shot.

I used to use EEzox, until I read the results of a test that was done on small steel plates that were wet, then left outside, watching the amounts of rust prevention from 40 or so brands of different oils. Hands down winner was Hornady One shot.

Being the doubting Thomas, I have a Modern single-barreled shotgun that I put choke tubes in. I coated the barrel and receiver, inside of the bore, with the Hornady one-shot. I put it in my Hay barn, which is open to the elements. One month, two months, three months, four months, five months, six months, inspections showed no rust on the barrel or receiver! I called it "good enough", for us who live in the humid South.

That’s the last test I saw. When my EEzox ran out, I bought the WD Specialist. Hornady doesn’t need my money.

Out here in dry desert air I do nothing to them. Just normal oiling after cleaning.

My solution to storage is .... I don't. Over the past 10 years I decided to only keep those guns that I use/shoot on a regular basis. Went from 30 down to 5. Most given away, some sold. A few were traded to buy something better. Part of the reason is I'd rather see someone else enjoy them rather than just sit. The other part is I want to use the space for other things.

I have a buddy who swears by cleaning the rifle or shotgun, lightly oiling it with whatever gun oil he has and letting it sit a day or two. Then he wraps the gun in its entirety with Seran Wrap secured with electrical tape, not too tight, and puts them in his gun cabinet. He says he has a few rifles stored that way for years w/o issue. Has anyone else tried anything like this?

With the rust colored streaking on the one plate with the Hornady One Shot, I believe that there is something wrong with the plate in that area. If the product had broken down, rust would have covered the entire plate. Likewise, plate #1 did not have any rust with the Horanday one-shot. Obviously, all three are excellent in this test.

As I said earlier, I left a single-barreled shotgun treated with the Hornady One shot in my hay barn for 6 months with no rust on it in the humid Southern Summer.

I had used Eezox for years, but never tested it.

Rig, Rig and more Rig. I use worn out t shirts and dress shirts, washed thoroughly w no detergent left, sprinkle oil all over. these are my general gunrags. then dab w Rig and put thin coat on metal. I have another product, but I cannot conjure the name of it....
