Your loads at Raton.

Talked to a friend about Raton last night about load changes in different climates. I have shot the load at 80 degrees and 100 with no difference.

Someone told me that in Raton the impact will be higher because of the elevation.

My question is: Can the node change??? Or will it still be stable???

The elevation will not affect the muzzle velocity of your load. If your load is in an accuracy node at sea level, it will remain so in Raton.

I'm ignoring the air pressure in the barrel ahead of the bullet.

Of course, other external factors may affect the accuracy of your bullets; for example you will be a lot closer to Roswell.

What will affect your load is the ~50° morning temperature. Last year, in late September, morning temps were in the forties and many competitors had dropout issues. Temps will likely range from low fifties to mid eighties. Load accordingly.

Since you are going there for the single most important F class match in this country, for the next 20 years anyway, you should if at all possible shoot the http://www.baldeaglesrc.org/Resources/Documents/2013%20rmpm.pdf and/or the http://www.baldeaglesrc.org/Resources/Documents/2013%20Santa%20Fe%20Regional.pdf next month. Absolutely knowing that your gun/ammo combination is solid on any given range is critical to the confidence level required to win a major match. Shooting both these matches prior to the Nationals and the Worlds and utilizing the onsite loading facility would allow you to tweak to perfection.

If temperature is significantly lower than that in which the load was developed, it can be enough to reduce pressure and affect combustion efficiency. This is often evidenced by seeing one or more shots per string with notably less velocity than the rest. Those shots "drop out" of the ten ring and the elevation where the rest are impacting. It is very frustrating to make a good wind call and clean break but still see a nine result. [br]

I shoot regularly in south Texas where it's warmish in the summer and can be as cool at 35-40 at the December-January matches. I use the same load year round and have never experienced any difference is ignition or accuracy. It also was not an issue last year at Raton. As long as one is aware of the change in density altitude and accounts for it, there should not be an issue.

I also never leave my ammo in the sun or out in the car overnight in wintertime. The judicious use of a flexible cooler goes a long way to keeping things stable.

1+ for Bayou Shooter.

Don't change my load for Raton, Phoenix, or Houston. Consistancy stays the same. POI changes a little, but not much more than 1 moa.

10 ring at 300 yards is 2.85"

So, looks like a 50-4X on a good day, a 49-4X if the shot was low enough to be in the "corner" and you had a target puller that was having a bad day and scored a 9 because it was too close to call. Sorry, better luck next time! ;D
