XTC rifle

What type of sights would be suitable to show up to an xtc match with. I have a couple of bolt rifles in .308 that i would like to try and use.

The short answer is you can use a scope, or a target sight.

The long answer really depends upon what configuration the rifles are setup in. Does the rifle have a detachable magazine? Is the receiver drilled and tapped for a receiver side mount?

No matter which way you go I would encourage you to spend some time practicing magazine changes/stripper clip reloads and working the bolt. It takes dedication and solid fundamentals to get off 10 well placed shots while working the bolt in 60 seconds. There's a reason that the firing line is dominated by semi-auto's.

You asked for the type of sights so I think the answer is aperture sights. There are a lot of different brands to choose from and they are used on the semi auto match rifles as well as the bolt action match rifles. If you have the opportunity to attend a match and observe what folks are using for XTC it would be very helpful.

Wow, yeah maybe the bolt rifle would not be the best choice. 700 P and savage 10 are the two rifles both set up for optics. I didn't realize that scopes were allowed. I think you are right that i should go watch a match to get a feel for what I would need. I seen a club close to me holds a lot of xtc and high power matches. It has got me to thinking about it anyway.

Don't be put off by using a bolt gun for XTC. Many shooters of all abilities use them (I used to) and if you just relax it is very doable. The Tubb T2K was designed, first and foremost, for XTC and won the match rifle championship at Perry last summer. Your action can be smoothed over a bit and the rest is up to you to practice both dry and live fire.

Sugar,
If your interested in XTC or midrange matches in FLA check out Port Malibar Rifle and Pistol Club in Palm Bay. It's a 600yd range with pits and 20 targets. Go to PMRPC com for match schedules. We run matches every month, both XTC and midrange. Really. Nice range, great competitors, and lots of fun. They also promote a slew of other shooting disciplines both pistol and shotgun. We are always glad to see new shooters.

Scopes are allowed but it is not as feasible as it may sound. The issue is that the scope must be in a different axial position for each of the three shooting positions. I have developed a method for doing that and can share with you if you decide to go that route but I would start with what you have and learn with that. learning what other XTC folks are doing by attending a match to observe will help you "buy once, cry once". I have posted information on using a scope for XTC in another thread and can email a write up with picture if you would like to see it.

Yeah I am definitely going to check the next match out. At what distance would an xtc match be held?
The XTC match is fired in four stages, the standing slow fire stage and the sitting rapid fire stage are fired at 200 yards, the prone rapid fire stages are fired at 300 yards and the prone slow fire stage is fired at 600 yards. There are reduced course matches fired at 100 yards without pits and this is the best place for a new shooter to learn.

Yep, Port Malabar was where I was looking. I was looking for FTR matches. But heck I can be flexible.
XTC and F Class F/TR are different type matches. The prone F/TR is all slow fire and is normally fired at 600 and 1000 yards but there are reduced course F/TR matches also. Both are a lot of fun.

Thanks to all. We will take a look at the schedule and try to attend the next match at Port Malabar to get some insight.

Used to be some highpower shooters across the lake from you at ochachobee, also Markham Park holds walk and paste 100 yd matches ,look up Florida sport shooting assoc.

For a rear sight people are using Phoenix, Warner, PNW, Centra, etc. All will work. You will also need a rear iris. For the front sight the majority of shooters use the Right Sight. You can shoot it with scope there aren't many that do but there are some, it is rather fun to do this. If you are shooting a traditional bolt action rifle however it won't work as you have to reload during the rapid stages. Bolt gunners either are reloading with stripper clips or via a mag such as with a tube gun kit.

Stages are as follows
200yd offhand: 2 sighters and 20 rounds slow fire in 22 minutes
200yd rapid sitting: 2 sighters followed by 10 rounds in 60 seconds (must have a reload so shot either 2/8 or 5/5) Then another 10 round string in 60 seconds
300yd rapid prone: 2 sighters followed by 10 rounds in 70 seconds, then another 10 round string in 70 seconds
600yd slow prone: 2 sighters and 20 rounds slow fire in 22 minutes

What Shawn said. Go to www.usrifleteams .com this is the most active XTC website.
Welcome to our sport.

Go to PMRPCRIFLE.com for the Malabar rifle match schedule. On April 5 there will be an intro session to get new guys aquainted with the range procedures and initial zeros. The second weekend of the month are the midrange/F-Class matches, and on the third weekend it's XTC matches.

Come on down!

Hey Jeff, I spoke with Nick and he advised me to show up this Sunday for an orientation. So we are going to try and make it. The orientation sounds like a good idea to make sure everything goes well for the match.

Awesome! Hope it goes well for you, and welcome! I won't be around to see you for the matches for a while as I just rotated to working weekends, but there will be several folks able to help you there.

Shoot me a post if you have any questions.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff,
Saturdays are just about the only days that I can attend a match. I am going to try and get into a service rifle soon. That seems like something the wife and myself would enjoy and the matches are shot on Saturday. I did notice that there were 2 day matches in high power. Can one just shoot 1 day or do you have to shoot both days?
