XP 100

I am wanting to build a custom XP 100. I am only going to use it for varmints. coyotes, crows bobcats. Would a improved 6BR gain any advantage over a 6BR or would it be better to just get a 15 or 16 inch barrel instead of 14 inch 6BR. I have a XP 100R in 22-250 now. Wanted to shoot to 300 yds or more.

i have had 3 xp-100's all built by R W Hart with 15"bbl in 222 and 7br, they are supper accurate and i would consider the 6br as choice s the short bbl will limit advantage of the imp.

I have one with 2 18" 6br barrels, one in 14 and one in 8 twist.

Shooting Barts 68g I get 3300fps in the 14 twist and with Berger 87g vlds I get 2950 in the 8 twist.

The 14 twist is fine out to 300yds, if I know it's going to be past that I'll use the 8 twist and have had no difficulty out to 525yds.

Hope that helps some.

First, what max distances would you really like to have beyond 300 yards?
Rear or center-grip?
Do you intend on using a brake?
LER (handgun) scope or rifle scope?
Tell me in terms of rifle performance what kind of MV do you want?
If it is just barely;y beyond 300 yards, I would would look at the highest BC V-Max and choose a twist a tad faster than what would be needed and do a 16" 6BR.
If you want more distance, 6 Dasher or a 6XC and go with a 8T barrel, and have it throated for the 105 A-Max

So far, Pizzaman joined, asked a question, and hasn't been back since....

Maybe he's on a delivery, don't want that meatlovers special to get cold.

A few more questions. I have a XP 100 in 22-250 now. Can that action be used for a 6BR or a 6XC? What length of barrel and contour? I was thinking of a 16" barrel but not sure of contour. I see that some of your pistols have rifle scopes. Leaning towards a Leopold 6.5x20. If using a rifle scope I would assume a heavier barrel with a break would prevent a scope ring tattoo over your eye. Which is best target trigger for this action?

Your X-P R is nothing more than a model 7 repeater action, which is fine for a BR or XC.

You need to decide what finished weight you're looking for....the more they weight, the less they recoil. 16-18" is a good length, gets the muzzle blast a little further out, but gain it back with a brake.

Tattos aren't really a problem with rifle scopes....you get close to get on target, then back off to about a half a field of view, and let'er rip.

With a repeater, you can run a Jewell.

P,
Center or rear grip?
The Dell trigger is the best center-grip trigger out there-Sort of like a Jewel as far as pull, but no safety.
Not all brakes are made equal either. Holland's Gen 2 Radial is my favorite.
I shoot some big boy rifle cartridges in my specialty pistols with a 338 Lapua Improved being the biggest in a center-grip XP.
I have a 5.5-22 NF on that XP currently.
With a 6XC, 16" barrel (If you choose longer that is fine) and a good solid-bottomed brake a riflescope is no problem.
Scopes like a VX-3 or Mark 4 Leupold are best choice in that that have longer eye relief on the higher X's.
I also use NF, Vortex Razor HD, and Sightron S-III's.
This is several years old, but should answer questions: http://www.handgunhunt.com/promo/membership/features/readNewArticle.php?oid=12&title=Rifle%20Scopes%20On%20Specialty%20Handguns

Not a great video, but will give you an idea of what a good brake can do.

Ernie (XPHunter) helped me when I bought my first XP100. It is a heavy barreled 243 AI with a muzzle break, center grip and shoots almost as good as my benchrest rifles. I suspect that a better shooter could get less than 1/2 moa every group! The muzzle break is a requirement in this rookies opinion to help with shot to shot consistency. Tom

Ok I have decided on a 6XC with a 16" barrel. I am going to use a scope I have from my 22TTH over to pistol and get a new scope for the 22TTH. Putting a timney trigger on it. Most shot will be less than 300 yds but some will be up to 500yds. What manufacturer of barrel and brake would be best for this?. What thickness of barrel?. Also what brass is best Norma or SSS. What dies to use?And lastly who to put this rig together and how long should I expect it to take?. I have been emailed that Dave Bruno and Clay Spencer have done nice pistols.

I shot pistol silhouette using an XP-100 in 7mm BR in IMSA rules w/ iron sites. The std 6mm BR should give you what you need but look at the bullet that you like and get the twist to shoot it. I would look at using the 80 or 95 gr Berger as a possible bullets.

If you do alot of hiking in deep snow and dense cover to get to your hunting spots. A heavy XP100 is no more fun to carry than a heavy rifle.

If you do more bench shooting or hike short distances the extra weight is nice. I have used 6mm-223, 6mmBR(in the picture above) and 243Win in bolt pistols with 70gr Nosler BT on coyotes and a few deer.
