Is camping allowed at the Rawlings range?
CW

Good question. I don't have the answer. You need to talk to the match director, Dave Urasky (dave.urasky@gmail.com 307-321-5049) or

Patti Hays (phays@rawlins-wyoming.com)
Recreation Superintendent
City of Rawlins
Dept. of Recreation Services

Thanks, I sent an email to Dave yesterday.
Have a great day

Is camping allowed at the Rawlings range?

I heard from Dave on July 3rd and at present the city council was NOT allowing onsite camping. It is my understanding from Dave, that the city owns the range therefore they have the final say.

I did see that there is a local KOA nearby, but I am unsure what their site vacancy will be.

The camping topic is offically confusing. Here is the email I got fro patri who is the rawlins rec su per as noted above in a post. I don't know who "we" are:

Thanks for the email. The camping is dry camping. I think that is what we agreed on. Patti

If anyone gets a solid yes or no this week; please share what you learn. I don't want the hassle of pulling a trailer to be told to stay at an oilfield koa. Done that before, I donated parts to someone that needed them more than me I guess.

It sure is, below is the last I heard from Dave...like you, I do not look forward to camping at the KOA...

From Dave Urasky on July 3 @ 8:29 pm:

At the present time I have to say no. Since it is a city owned range it's complicated. At least so I'm told. I am still working on it but it's out of my control. It's in the hands of city management, if that tells you anything.

I understand about wanting to stay at the range. That's how I do it when I travel. I will keep this email and let you know if something changes.

Thanks for the info. That's a real bummer. Staying on the range, sharing lies with fellow shooters is a lot of fun.

Here is the match bulletin for 1,000 yard, Long Range Wyoming State Championship in Rawlins this July.
We need more F-tr shooters to participate this year.
Will have the new Silver Mountain electronic target system.

Do you still have room for another F/TR shooter at this late date? It' s kinda late to mail in my entry, but I see you have registration scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Call Dave Urasky and talk with him 307-321-5049. Don't wait too long.

I emailed him a couple of days ago asking this same question, but no response...guess I will try calling also... I try not to do that just in case they have to work...thanks for nothing...you ask for more shooters but only one guy seems to have the status information on how many can shoot this match...you have no information on accommodations, even your local hotels have no clue that this event is happening and we can't get a straight answer from Patti or Dave as to whether or not we can camp onsite...I guess this is just a good old boy club that happened to land the state championships so they can shoot on their new fancy electronic targets...have fun guys, guess you want me to shoot elsewhere...I can do that...

Too bad you feel that way.
It is not a good ol boys club.
I enjoy shooting F-class Long Range and have participated in the last three Wyoming State Championships. Dave is a friend of mine who is working very hard to put on his very first match. He has built the 1,000 yard range at Rawlins from nothing, with the help of the Wyoming Shooting Association and the NRA . I am helping him promote this event by getting copies of the match bulletin out there for shooters to see. All the information is on the match bulletin, just like any other match. I don't live in Rawlins and don't have all the answers about this new venue. It takes much effort to put on a match where none existed before. Come to Rawlins and have a good time with good shooters.

Joe,

This is not a personal attack on your friend, Dave. In fact I met Dave a few years back when the F-Class Nationals were held at Ben Avery. He was with a group from Wyoming and what I remember most is the Isis Hunting Permit on one of the shooting carts. We talked then about the new 1000 yard range being built in Rawlins. I was excited because I was not liking the 8-9 hour drive to Worland to compete in the State Championships.

Being Match Director is no easy task, but it does require a team around him. He needs all kinds of help from jurors, range officers, etc. You have taken it upon yourself to desiminate information via this site, so you should at least try and know some of the answers other than call Dave. And frankly, all of the information is not on the bulletin. If you look at the NRA template for match announcements, it does have a section for Accommodations or how many shooters are allowed, number of relays, etc. And really that is the only real question being asked here. Shooters like being close to there equipment or at least knowing it is secure. I was totally amazed when I called the 4 highest rated hotels in the area to find that they knew nothing of a Wyoming State event being held close by.

As I said, being a match director is no fun, but he has to build a team around him. It is more than the range facility and setup, much much more. I have the privilege to shoot with a World Class Palma shooter in Idaho and I am still learning how to setup and run a match. He has been all over the world shooting and brings back a boatload of information on what works and doesn't work. I am not stepping into those shoes any time soon, but I have helped out where I can when asked. This year I am one of the jurors at their State match.

I would like to take you up on your offer to shoot your event, however it is harder than pulling teeth on a chicken trying to get some of the basic information. If there are still slots available, and I get an answer in time, I will be on the line.

Today's trials and troubles...

I tried calling Patti regarding the status of match applications...it turns out that she has been out of the office for surgery and no one there can give me any information regarding the status of the match sign ups.

Tried calling Dave, got his voicemail...left a message asking the same question...

Will keep you posted...

Just spoke to Dave...

He is limiting the number of shooters to 40 since there are only 10 shooting positions. His current count of applicants as of tonight is 18. He thinks that Patti made special pricing arrangements at the (he thinks) Hampton Inn for $99 per night for this event. However, I was able to get a rate of $77 per night at the Pronghorn Inn & Suites because they were willing to match the price on the internet. Clean rooms, on-site breakfast, and good ratings. There are several well rated restaurants in the town of Rawlins also, Thai food, Mexican food, and steak houses. There is also a Walmart and markets available.

With Patti being our for surgery, he was unable to confirm whether or not camping on the range has been approved. Patti is due back in the office on Monday, if all goes well.

Hope to see you there...

Just received an email from Dave...it confirms that there is a block of rooms set aside for competitors at the Hampton Inn for $99 per night. Also,at last nights board meeting it was decided that camping will be allowed. There are no hookups (no water, no sewer, no electric) and no fee, so you will have to be self contained.

He has been asked to hold a practice match on July 22. This has been submitted to the NRA for approval regarding classification, however approved or not it will be held. Onsite registration at 0700, first rounds fired 0900.
