Wrong Cartridge: 7x57 vs. 7mm Rem Mag

I have to admit when I started out (early) my dad and uncles were of the "shoot a pie plate" types. Our "range equipment" consisted of a fencepost and a burning barrel with a target taped to it. Deer taken were generally the dumbest most frightened creatures that stumbled upon us.
I recall taking the rear ocular off my dad's 4x bushy and reachinginto touch the crosshair, which broke of course. I hunted with it rather than tell him.
It was not until my cousin took me out with his groundhog gear (40XB 6mm and Redfield 3200) that I began to understand how things worked. It quickly became a passion and multiple varmint rifles later I was cash poor and gun rich, with a little wisdom too.
Sometimes all it takes is a little coaching and show and tell.

I used to run a timer at our clubs USPSA matches, large federal law enforcement training facility in our community and some of the students would come out and shoot a match occasionally. Many times I've seen 9mm cases blown out from being fired in a .40 pistol. We pay stupid a lot of money....

Knew a guy shot all his life. Had two rifles on the bench. 2506 and 308. Stuck a 308 in the 2506 pulled the trigger. Enough said. Doug
Could Happen to most Anybody, that's NOT paying, "attention',.. momentarily !
I tried Sticking 6 XC Ammo, in my 6.5 Creedmoor,. YIKES ! ( Caught my mistake, BEFORE closing, the Bolt ! ).
Something, just didn't, Feel,. "Right" ( LOL ! )
Now, I put, One Rifle at, a Time in my Pick up Bed and ONE Type of, the Correct, Ammo at, a Time !
Getting Old, AIN'T for,.. Sissies !!!
NO more, "Cutting corners" for, Me ! ( Shooting, 2 Rifles, 3 shots at a Time, allows, the Barrels, to Cool ).
SO, so, NOT worth, the possible, Grief !!

Yeah go to the range in the weeks before hunting season and you might see most anything. Just think, these same people are in the woods hunting... nuff said.
I quit deer hunting for several reasons. In the late after noon I was walking out on a 2 track dirt road, near me was a group of hunters and I heard one say he shot at a noise in the bushes.

Once I saw a old guy at the range with a loaded rifle pointed down range and his finger by the trigger while guys were down range. I told him about range rules and he might shoot someone. He ignored me and kept his finger by the trigger. I am sure the safety was off. His friends were in front of him down range. It doesn't get any worse than that. Some people shouldn't own guns. No range safety officer.

It was the last day of 1st rifle elk seaon, I took a friend out to help him get a cow. He was not a shooter and not much of a hunter. I found him some elk at about 325 yards, got him set up and he starts shooting. Miss after miss, he had only loaded the gun and had no extra rounds with him. He went back to the truck to get more ammo, while he was gone, I picked up one of the empty cases, it looked funny, I looked at the rifle, barrel said 30-06, headstamp said 270 win.

The guy I was talking about in the 308 in the 2506 has been gone for a while. He was a elk, deer.turkey hunter. One of the old shooters when I was young. I never heard him talk about it. Didnt hurt him. He probably wasnt proud of it. The bullet might not have made it out of the chamber would be my guess but Im guessing. Doug

I went to a public range today looking to fire some test loads. This range has been fairly empty of others, when I’ve been there before. The place was packed with people sighting in before their elk season t

I made the same mistake ONCE for the same reason as you. I couldnt believe many loaded rifles got pointed at me and others by supervised kids in the short time it took me to pack up and split!

I usually stay away from even the private range I belong to on weekends from late Sept. thru mid Nov. The once a year shooters come out of the proverbial woodwork. The lack of common sense is astounding. There may even be alcohol involved with some of the stupidity I've seen, but I dont get close enough to smell test. The backstops are taking a beating, the cross boards are shot to pieces because nimrod didn't bring a target so shoots at clay birds perched atop the board. Fridays aren't even safe lately as some of the geniuses must have retired.

It's amazing how many people still think that just because it says "7mm" on the box, they are all the same.

I still hear people say that they have a 7mm, and the surprised look on their faces when I ask WHICH 7mm...

I had good teachers. My dad his friends were all safety first shooters. I remember when somebody would say, remember when so and so stuck that 308 in that 2506 ? Blowed er all to hell. Not that it cant happen to anybody but it made an impression on me. Doug

I'm actually stunned that we're still having these conversations about this subject. You'd think after all this time that even novice shooters would be more savvy about what they stuff into their rifle chambers, but nooooo. These new generations of shooters claim to 'know it all', but forums and range incidents say different.

Read what's stamped on the barrel, read the cartridge box label.....it's not brain surgery for crikey sakes!

And remember, in the old days many of the black powder single shot rifles had no markings whatsoever on the gun to indicate what cartridge it was chambered for. Or simply the caliber of barrel with no clarification as to what chambering. Remarkable really.

Life expectancy was shorter back then. Now we know why - and it was not just typhoid and syphallis.
