Wrapping up the 2018 Palma season

Wrapped up a successful Palma season. I like to reflect the season and make changes for next season based on the perceived results from the season. Not just the good and bad matches, but a sum of the whole season. Gotta have a plan to improve!

2018 improvements were as follows:
1) anneal brass and add a mandrel to improve consistency of seating force. (might have gone overboard
2) work on head position (hard to measure, but I felt there was room to improve)
3) train more over the winter (planned on buying a scatt trainer)
4) shoot a match at a new location (learned a lot doing this)
5) get eyes checked for new shooting glasses

What adjustments are you making to improve?

I will share my plan for 2019 in a few days.

That's funny. You put some rounds down range this last year. Not sure you will be able to shoot more until you retire.

I heard there is a match this weekend in Tri city Wa
Rattle snake shooting facility
Long range team starts Friday

Rattle Snake is on my short list. Long way to travel for a weekend match. Didn't seen anything longer than two day matches on their summer schedule. Do you know if they have a 3 day or 4 day match sometime during the year?

I wouldn't know that, this particular match was brought to my attention by a member asking if I was attending, you may have to call the range to clarify their event schedule

Going to play with more castoff on buttplate to see if I can get buttplate more straighter up and down.

Might put some wood putty on my Grip to create more consistent trigger hand position/trigger placement.

Continue to work on speeding up shot process, deliver X's faster.

2018 Improvements
  • Practice shooting at distance (500 and 700 yards) instead of reduced targets (100 yards).
  • Bought a shotmarker to make this easier and faster.
  • Need to aneal cases this winter (never have).
  • Made rifle adjustments until it fits like a glove now (seems every rifle takes at least a year to make it fit right).
  • Made it to more matches this year.
  • Worked on shot process and the mental game.
Thats what I can think of at the moment.
I haven't settled on 2019 goals yet.

Bought a new spotting scope scope. One of my friends pointed out that I roll out of position to look in the scope.

Need to work on my cheek piece and see I I can get a better head position.

Working on a scatt and live fire training for the winter months.

Not sure if the plan will get me any more Xs, but hopefully it keeps a few 9s away.

What will the cast off improve?

Mount a buttplate setup from an eliseo or white oak stock in it. I have some leftover bondo from the grip I built up for my tubegun you can have

Wrapping up the 2018 Palma season? Sheesh. It never started. Shot a 1600 agg, smallbore prone match in 2017, and 1 weekend (2 Palma matches) in 2018. Scheduling of matches and family obligations never worked out for shooting. The real question is: For 2019, should I take the plunge and go to matches cold, or should I make a feeble attempt to practice ahead of time? I used to be able to go cold to a match and not look like a complete novice, but as age creeps on me, I may have lost the ability to do that.
