Wrapped Around the Axle on a New Target Scope--?

I am looking for a new (or new to me) scope for a local score match where we shoot 50 yard rimfire targets at 200 and 300 yards. The bull is 4" and the X ring is 0.4" No sighters or foulers are allowed--every shot is for record. It would be a huge advantage to be able to see 6mm bullet holes in the black at those ranges. It would also seem that 1/8 minute adjustments would be desirable. Then I read on this Forum that one can pay a handsome sum for a scope that won't hold zero. Yikes!

Any advice appreciated. Good advice appreciated even more.

Your biggest enemy to seeing bullet holes is mirage and if the target is light colored for the bullseye or if black is it backlite.

That said i have seen the pasters on a 1000 yard target with my Sightron S3 8-32x56 when a cloud came over and the mirage stopped. That .75x.375 paster would equate to a .243 hole at 300 yards.

The larger the diameter of your objective (front lens) then the finer the resolution you can decern. No free lunch here. You are going to have to pay a lot.

Is there a reason you can’t use a spotting scope along with your rifle and scope?

It is real hard to see bullet holes in a black target. The better scopes resolve better and let's you see a little better in mirage. Some are good at it and some aren't. The best scope for seeing that I ever shot was the Nightforce Competition. Matt

Roger that. Nightforce Competition is out of my bracket right now--even used. Though you sure see a lot of them for sale.

No spotting scopes allowed. Good to hear about the Sightron. I could afford that one. I don't see any with 1/8 minute clicks though?

The LRTD/TD has 1/8 MOA clicks. It is a target dot. I don’t know if they are still made. I have one on my midrange F-class rifle

There are Leupold 36x on this forum from time to time. Usually go for around $450.00 or so.

I struggle seeing 6mm holes in the black at 300 and my eyes aren’t that bad. For comparison, I can see hits on white at 600 frequently until mirage gets rolling.
I have/had NF comp, Nxs, br and 8-32 and 10-50 sightrons.
I’d ask to look through some scopes at the range with your targets if possible to see what works for you. Good luck

Reckon one of those would resolve bullet holes in the black at 200 yards? Also wonder how it would do at 300 when the mirage gets going. I like the thought of fixe power scope--less to go wrong.

Not sure if you would be able to see holes at 200 yds. Someone may chime in. I have a 36x leupy with tucker conversion. Glass is extremely clear. Repeatable as the sun is bright. Only shot at white targets with it though. I read where shooters all have good things to say about theses scopes. Do a search on this site and you'll find a lot of info. jmho

The nightforce be 42 power scope would be a good way to go, they can be had for around a grand used and always seem to track perfect. For the money they are a good bench scope
