Would you like to see smaller f open targets?

It seems like it would be more interesting if f class matches were settled more often by score instead of just x count. Why is the f open target so much bigger than an ibs target? Like 600 yard bench with a 1.2" x

Do you shoot F-class ?

Ring sizes only matter when they are too big. My 500 yard club out here is seeing 600 with 50+ X's winning several times a year now. Used to be unheard of. Right now, we still have room and only have to used the tie-breaking rules (other than X-count) occasionally.

I figure that will change soon enough.

Another club I shoot at uses the equivalent of a 500 yard target at 600 for fun-matches a couple of times a year. Scores do fall just taking 1" off the 10 ring diameter.

What is the target size for F open?

Target size @ 600 & 1,000 yards is 72” square usually, 6’.

Problem is the diameter of the scoring rings themselves: something like 6” & 3” for 10 & X-ring & 600, 10” & 5” @ 1,000.

With the accuracy rigs being shot now can achieve, maybe switching to the 200 yd SR target’d instead be helpful...

And no, I don’t. Still stuck with my Warners & Rightsights thankyouverymuch.

Yes. At the club I shoot at the winner in 600 and 1000 yard f class is frequently decided by x count with a score in the 598-600 range and 45+ x. I just think hitting the x should be a fun and special shot and not one you have to hit every time to win.

Yes I imagine that would make a big difference. You notice a lot of shots are on the line.

Recent match results.
6 out of the 9 f open shooters score over 590 with one f open at 600 and a prone guy at 600.

Funny this topic shows up. Brother-in-law has been bugging me to do an F Open match at Malabar this winter. I agreed. He gave me a mat to practice sleeping, oops, setting-up on. Then he told me you really don't need that accurate a rifle as the target is big.

I figured on using one of my worn-out Dasher barrels on a home-made stock with Panda in it. I mean why not? The scoring target is way big compared to benchrest so it seems like it would be easy to score on it.

Looks like the hardest thing to master is breathing without belly compression and hoping you are not assigned to lay in the mud.

I can tell you both Bob and Warren put in a lot of time at the range testing and practicing to shoot those scores. They are great shooters and their scores reflect that.
As for scoring rings being smaller it may come to that one day. Bullets have come a long way in the last couple years with higher B.C. and the equipment has become better also. Although You can't take anything away from the shooter because shooting consistent high master scores is an accomplishment in itself.

I do believe with electronic targets there needs to be a delay put in place and I think that would be a start in the right direction. I shoot prone in a sling now but started out shooting in f class and have seen open shooters complete there string and Im only three shots into my string. They get a condition and shoot them as quickly as possible. There's no waiting on the puller to mark the target and run it back up.

I'm not taking anything away from Bob and Warren or the other shooters there. I'm incredibly impressed every time I shoot with them and learn a lot from them as well. They would still win if the rings were smaller but I think it would be a more rewarding game if the x were more special.

You took the words out of my mouth Norm. Another option for those that think F Open is too easy is to come to the dark side and shoot F-TR. I can't remember ever hearing of a 600 being shot in TR. As a match director, I wouldn't want to have to stock a third target for Open shooters. It's already enough of a challenge squadding for sling and F class, don't throw a third into the mix.

It was just a couple years ago that the HM requirement was lowered because 'there weren't enough of them.'

My concern about changing classification requirements and, even more, target sizes, is how it effects things like records. If I'm not mistaken, the current F Open 600 yard record is 200-23X. So if we change the X-ring to say 2", what score does someone have to shoot to beat this record? Or do we just have a new set of records started and the current record holder has the old target record forever?

Some points to think about.
We changed from the 2 moa 10 ring to the 1 moa in 2007, I believe while keeping the target black the same as our parent sport, HP sling. While a lot of cleans have been shot at shorter ranges (especially 300 yd) I don’t think it is time to change targets yet. When most shooters start cleaning the X ring then it would be time to consider a smaller target. No one has yet cleaned a range aggregate (600-60x) at any range in a registered match. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

The constant all ten’s cleans would go away in many cases if the 7 second rule was made mandatory for electronic target. This needs to be done ASAP. FC is not BR and the custom of having a target pulled and marked needs to remain in the sport. Why should people shooting on ET’s have an advantage record wise over those that don’t? The HP committee needs to change this now!

If you reduced the targets to ½ moa tens etc., think about how hard it would be to score & past 10’s & X’s.

People tend to forget what changing targets entails. The clubs would have to buy new faces (what happens to a stock pile of old targets?). The NRA would have to change the rule book & start tracking all new records. Heck they have enough trouble getting caught up now on records and rules!

As someone pointed out, come out west if you want the game to get harder. I was amazed when I went to the TX State LR near Houston this year. I and others shot more 200 cleans at 1k than I have ever seen. But I shoot mostly at tricky ranges.
