Worth the risk: Rem 700 ?

I've managed to come across a Rem 700 Short action sitting in an HS precision stock (ADL) with an unknown aftermarket barrel in 6mm BR. I have no experience with the 6 BR at all, I've been loading my own for about 43 years , so I am familiar with the procedure. My question is , what is the opinion of the more experienced with this round ? Its an unknown to me as to the exact variant that the chamber could be , 6 BR AI, who knows whether it would require neck turning , barrel twist , there are alot of variables that could be encountered. Would you take a chance and get something you'd have to rebuild ? or just find a good donor action and build what you wanted?

It sounds like the unknown is just the exact chambering. A little effort and that can be resolved. The barrel could be shot out but @urbanrifleman can hook you up with a new barrel for cheap, or any of several other vendors. What is the trigger like? do you like the way it looks? It has a good stock, so unless it is much more expensive than a similar donor it sounds like you are ahead.

Trigger appears to be a tuned Remington trigger , 2 3/4 lbs , I was thinking if the barrel was shot out , getting it re barreled wouldnt be a big stretch.

It all depends on the price. If you can get it for the value of the action and stock, it could be a good deal. Sounds like you are pretty sure it's 6BR or a 6BRA. Both can be super accurate. A gunsmith could cast the chamber and look at the bore to see what you are dealing with.

It is amazing how many people comment about a barrel being shot out when a very small percent of rifles in circulation have been fired enough to even be broken in… A good cleaning done the proper way will revive a barrel in most guns. A re-barrel or re-chamber properly done by a competent gunsmith could be in order after examination by a qualified person.,

Given that the BR variants are just that - and that the BR is the lowest powered... If the rifle seems in good condition, put in a dummy round - or take it outside and put a real one in. If the round seems to chamber OK - pull the trigger! You will soon see if it's a BR or BRA etc! Seriously - just take care. If you feel that you have the experience and confidence - go for it. ( I would, but hey, have built some silly wildcats too and still have all my fingers and eyes)

I finally got my hands on the rifle today for a good thorough cleaning and inspection. Barrel appears to have a 5 land and groove barrel, 22" long, .745" at the muzzle, stainless fluted, tuned Rem trigger that pulls 2.5lbs on my RCBS trigger pull gauge. Trigger varied 2oz on 10 pulls. HS stock bedded fore and aft. I checked with the dollar bill to see if it was floated and it isn't. I'll see how it shoots before I attempt to do anything else to it. Leopold rings and bases. Bolt was full of grease, disassembled and cleaned thoroughly. Depending on how it shoots will tell me all I need to know. Just have to find some brass and get started. Dies showed up today, so all I need now is a little time to piddle with it.

No sir, the stock is a sporter style, and as many patches I pushed down the bore of the rifle, not once did it occur to me to check the twist. Its marked 6 mm BR. I will either have to cast it or obtain a few pieces of brass to check the chambering.

1:14 is what my cleaning rod and jag are telling me. I am guessing my 75 V-Max bullets won't stabilize. Guess I'd best be looking to trade to a lighter bullet.

Brass arrived today, if you haven't tried Blue Collar Reloading you need to. So, I proceeded to chamber a few empty brass cases in my rifle, all is well. Being the kid at heart that I am, I proceeded to load 20 rounds. Ran the new brass over the expander ball just to be sure of everything, light chamfer, deburr, steel wool over the case mouth. Primed, charged, and barely seated a Hornady 58 gr V Max (hoz53 recommendation), chambered it in my rifle, removed the loaded cartridge carefully and measured it. It's not jammed by the feel of the bolt closure, no heavy marks on the bullet. So, I have a starting point. I happened to have a lb of IMR 4227 that I had intended for one of my handguns but saw the data in the Nosler Manual and couldn't resist. l know it's probably not the best powder for this, but it was already in the cabinet, and I had yet to figure out what to do with it. If it's a pleasant surprise well then, I'd rather be lucky than good. 1st 6 br.jpg

Varget,& 8208, are a couple of good choices for powder but there are lots of different powders that work very well in a 6mmbr. No man should be with at least one of them. I myself have (5), How many cartridges have their own web site ??? That tells you they have to be GOOD!!!
