Worth putting a Chassis on a Rem 700 in .223?

I use a .223 for prairie dogs and I shoot out around 700 yds. Late in the season, a lot of shots are 300+ yds. I found a 700P in .223 for a pretty good price. I'm wondering if I picked that up, if it would work well with a chassis. Specifically, should it feed well from a detachable mag (AICS?)?

The stock design which suits your shooting needs and style is a personal choice. I've had various across a range of prices and personally prefer the KRG Bravo as a hybrid design for all types of field and prone shooting. It comes with functional mag hardware suitable for aics style mags. One of the moderate priced options.

Yes. A 700 P .223 is not only worth an AICS chassis, but the cost of weather proofing, too. They feed just fine as well. OD green all around. Even the NATO rounds.

I put my .223 Remington 700 SPS in a Magpul Hunter stock that will work with AICS mags.

I have a 700 with a M24 contour barrel in a KRG Bravo chassis. No problem feeding from the AICS mags..

Your "P" model 700 has a HS Precision stock which is a pretty good stock on its own and you can add a HS Prec detachable mag system to what you already have.

I have a Rem 700 LTR 223, it's actually a 223AI now, that I added a HS Prec detachable mag system to and even with it being a 223AI it feeds smooth as butter. My magazines are five rounders but HS Prec makes a ten round mag for them too.

If you want to put a different stock setup on your rifle by all means go for it but what you have is a very solid piece and you can easily add a detachable mag setup to it for a lot less then what a chassis setup will cost you.

This would be the 3rd rifle that I've owned with this specific style of HS precision stock. The other two were purchased in the 90's and were some of the first bolt action centerfire rifles that I worked with. I quickly learned that I absolutely HATE this style of stock. They are fine for shooting squirrels in the head with a rimfire out to 100 yds or so, but hundreds of hours behind an Anschutz 1813 free rifle totally ruined me in regards to using a traditional rifle stock for any kind of precision work. Ruined me on a lot of triggers too, but that's a different story. HS is a great stock, but if I'm going to spend money on a new stock and I want something better than a Boyd's, I'd rather jump straight to a chassis system because it checks all the boxes for the things I would want to do with the rifle.

I think I'm going to end up passing on the 700P. I think I'd prefer to put money into something that had a threaded barrel so I have the option of adding a tuner if I want. Still good to know that the 700 platform works well with a chassis when working with a .223.

For me the question would be does the H-S stock fit me. If not I would looking at a stock/chassis that would fit and accepted AICS magazines. The KRG Bravo is a good example, adjustable pull length, adjustable cheek piece, drop in as good as the H-S, easier to mount other shit if interested. If the H-S fit me (none of them have) and all I wanted was detachable magazines, then I would be tempted to get some bottom medal, but would certainly compare the total price of each option.

Totally agree on the fitment issue. Even if the LOP fit me, I prefer a vertical or near vertical palm swell or pistol grip, even when I'm shooting offhand. HS makes stocks that would fit my needs, and they are great stocks, but at that price point I'd rather spend a few dollars more and get a chassis.

Its true, I could have the barrel threaded, but by the time I pay to have that work done and buy a chassis, I'm into it for more than I want to spend on that rifle. The price is good, but not great for a rifle that was built using 1990's manufacturing and machining technology.

KRG Bravo, money well spent. I have four and filled all the cavities with lead shot. I also added a big rider. Works for my purpose on colony varmints.

if you can swing the coin, get a masterpiece arms matrix pro and weigh it down with some grayops weights. mine weighs 25lbs kitted out with a can and bipod. i can spot my own trace with 53 vmax at 3,600 fps (223 using n133).

oh yeah it uses aics mags and feeds like a dream!
