Worst threading job ever

A few people have mentioned practicing with aluminum. I look at it a little different, I would start with something closer to what you're going to be using. Might as well start getting a feel for your speeds and feeds right away.

You own stock in a carbide insert company?

I think Joes response is spot on. I will add, Id cut a generous relief where you want to end the thread until you get the hang of it. Also remember the compound scale is actual movement and the cross slide is 1/2 (amount removed on a diameter). Thus at 29 degrees the compound will cut 0.0017 on a diameter per 0.001 move.

I prefer to cut moving the compound (set at 29.5) when the thread is 3/4 done move the cross slide in 0.002, go back to the compound, then finish the last couple of cuts by moving the cross slide. Also verify the angle of the compound with an angle finder. Some are off.

Id also recommend a Jr. College class if offered in your area. The cost is generally reasonable, use their machines and material, you can build a few projects and have access to alot of knowledge. You can also tryr out the mills that way. If you have a lathe, a mill is likely in the future.

Great advice and thanks for your time guys. I am on an iPad, so I can’t respond to all or I’d be on here all morning. I ordered 20 5/8 hss blanks and a friend has a bunch of old barrel blanks to practice on. I will try again this week and post results so you can critique my work. Again, thanks. Great videos also!

If you have proper tool holder for these hss tool bits if you have trouble grinding them send a couple to me at my address an I would be glad to grind them for you I thread high speed tools only at about 65 to 70 rpm.

You will find after you get one of those 5/8 tool bits sharpened into a usable threading tool, that they make better parallels than cutting tools.

I'd give up worrying about cutting threads without a thread relief. It beats up tooling and serves no beneficial purpose to not cut a relief. Those that insist on not cutting a relief seem to be the same guys who have problems with galling. Quality threads have reliefs, not the other way around.

Hi mram,

I am not a gunsmith although I do all my own chambering and threading. I am self taught, learning from the internet and the generous help of experts here and other sites.

There are two recommendations that I REALLY appreciate now, every time I use them as they made learning a lot easier.

One is to use high speed inserts. I use the T-15 from Little Machine Shop. I really like them and use them almost exclusively.

The second is the 60 degree, 3/8 barrel threading bit from Brownells. 080-658-238WB. The wrong picture comes up or I would post a link to it. Anyhow, the bit is ground already and ready to make threads. You can work on your technique without wondering if the cutting tool is the problem. It has cut probably 2 dozen tenons and I have only touched it up with a diamond stone. Each time I use it I thank the person who recommended it.

Jim

Jim, thanks. I will play with all the toys I bought and get the basics down. I am planning a build next month, so I have a bit of practice to do
