If my memory serves me correctly, we had a limited season here in Minnesota several years ago that was not renewed after the first season. They are pretty much rampant in the north half of the state and gobble up the deer like appetizers. IMO locals SSS as best they can but hardly make a dent. Just had one across the lake from me earlier this winter in a neighbors yard......Be nice to see a wolf season (hunting & trapping) again so I can go back to deer hunting and actually see something other than wolves and wolf tracks. No season ever in Colorado. Theoretically we don't have them. I know people that swear they see them, and occasionally there is one killed by a car or something. Lots of people around here want them, there is even a big display at the Aspen airport extolling the virtues of wolf reintroduction.
It is my belief that the anti hunters want the wolves so that there are not enough animals to hunt. They get their precious wolves and they get to eliminate hunting of big game animals. Over time fewer people will hunt and the hunting lobby will have less ability to fight for our causes.
Where legal, shoot as many as possible. Where not legal, shoot all the coyotes you can, especially the big ones.

I just deleted a 200 word paragraph responding to many posts above. Tell you what. Try and figure something out for yourselves. Enjoy the journey. Go to the Idaho webpage, go there and look at the Elk harvest for a far back as they keep accurate records. I looked at Unit 27 where the wolves were originally released. Do this for yourself. The numbers of Elk harvested have remained steady, the number of hunters has increase almost three fold. All while the numbers of wolves are increasing, in fact so much that they have moved out and spread. Think for yourself what that means when people trumpet that the wolves have killed off 50% of anything and that the numbers of hunters are dropping. Think for yourself.
I am not pro wolf or anti hunter. So I challenge my fellow hunters to think for themselves and not fall into simply repeating whatever they heard or think they heard. I looked for myself, so I can make my own opinions and decisions instead of someone else's. Good luck.

I suppose the Deer and Elk didn't disappear in Yellowstone. Ask anybody that lives out there. Outfitters in areas have went out of business because the hunters weren't coming anymore. I also don't believe numbers posted from any game department. I have lots of friends who live in those states and in areas they wiped out the game animals. Then they move on and start again. Matt

Wolves were not originally released in Idaho the Canadian wolf was released by Yellowstone park. In the 90's there were 2,000 Elk cow permits in the Gardner area last I looked and it's been a few years I think it was down to 100 and we're talking of eliminating all of the permits. There was no reintroduction it was B.S they were already here I moved to montana in 91 and used to spend alot of time at the Lost Trail Ranch outside Kalispell the wolf was there then I new were there dens were the guys that worked there showed me. I saw there tracks in the snow every hunting season there's no mistaking a wolf track. I don't swallow one bit the wolf numbers are dropping I have spent alot of time in the selway down the Bitterroot it's sad the moose and Elk numbers were I used to se them Moose numbers are non existent compared to what they were 15 years ago and what elk are left are literally living like Billy goats it's the only way for them to survive. Last time I was in there the wolfs had killed a moose and ate it right in the creek . I'm very sceptic at the numbers the feds put out there and our local biologists have alot of pressure on them so they have to be careful, why well follow the dollar.

I have had the chance to live in four of the western states and work in most of the others. When working in the mountains or deserts or grasslands you get a chance to come in contact with people who work for the state/fed governments that deal with what we are talking about here. Normally we would get along very well with each other since we may need to help each other or need help ourselves and your a long way from any other help getting to you, some of those people agreed with the programs they were doing and some didn't but to keep their job did as they were told because it was the plan in place at that time.
I live in the northeast corner of Oregon and i am about 80 miles from Washington state and about 100 miles from Idaho, I hunt and visit both and pay attention to both. I have also sat on the Oregon game commission at one time and had a chance to learn what goes into making the rules we may or may not agree with.
Perhaps i can best explain it this way, ... If i am the group or state agency that wants bring a breed of animal or what ever it may be into our state, i first find out the chances of it passing the voting public. In Oregon there are three county's that control what happens in this state, (there are 51 counties in the state) these three counties are on the west side of the state and yes they like the warm and fuzzy feelings they get from doing things like adding the wolf here to our side of the state.
Since i am the boss of the state i tell the agency in charge to make this happen, since i know that it will go before the voters and we have the voting power in our three fuzzy counties we bring it for a vote and it passes. Now i tell the agency head to make it look like a good thing for the public and that person does so or looses their well paid state job. This is how it works.
To think that the hunting regulations come from honest unbiased research is foolish at best, i have spent years working with these people and half to most of them believe everything needs to be locked up. I have a report,(on state letter head paper) from the head of the region 6 ODFW manager asking the supervisor of the Wallowa Whitman national forest, (this is a 2.3 million acre forest), lock the forest up because "people were ruining it". Even though the research showing that it should be locked up was done by openly environmentalist members of his staff.
Yes research is very much the best thing we can do to learn the truth, but you must go beyond the surface as well.

Where did all the moose go i haven't seen one in 6 years i live in north fork Idaho
Our elk have learned to adapt to life with the wolves. When wolves were first introduced the elk had no clue how to deal with them and they wiped out a large portion of our herds. If you look at harvest statistics from the mid 2000's they were down quite a bit. I shot about the 13th or 14th wolf ever legally shot in Idaho in 2008 and when I took it in to get checked I asked the head wolf biologist about a cow elk muzzleloader hunt they made a drawing. It use to be a general tag that over 600 people would get tags for. Well they made it a 50 tag drawing. He said they really needed to get rid of all the tags because the population was dropping so fast there weren't going to be any elk left to shoot before too much longer but the pressure from hunters made them keep a few tags. Even though the elk number have come back some they haven't increased the tag numbers.

Agree with Matt, Does anybody get to hunt Yellowstone? That should tell you what the Wolves do to a herd. Don't believe the hunters made them disappear. Just Sayin
Threads like this are made hunting forums. You must be thinking of the forums most liberals read that try and protect the much management needed over population if wolves in some areas. This is real stuff for sportsman and hunters. Nothing in it will destroy any part of this forum... Plain and simple !!!
In Michigan, the wolf is once again protected. The antis rallied and the feds put a protection order on them. Michigan's upper peninsula is over run with wolf numbers. Our DNR simply told the federal government that they were not going to babysit the wolves any more. If wolves get poached or killed illegally, the DNR will not spend man hours looking into this problem. Between the very bad Winters and over population of wolves, our deer herd is pathetic in that region. Residents are losing pets and livestock everyday. Bear dogs are being killed by wolf packs annually and rabbit dogs as well. This is only the beginning of this problem. If the feds do not address it rather than worry about what PETA has as an agenda, these wolves will be the very top of the food chain.
I guess I might have a "dog" in this hunt. ( pun intended )
Here in NC it is much the same, 3 regions run the state - Research triangle, Charlotte and the funky little libtard city of Asheville to represent the vastly conservative Western region. Population centers you see. Some years ago, these enlightened representatives on our Commision reintroduced Red Wolves to our state. In the far West mountains and in the swamps of the Alligator Wildlife refuge in the east.
So many wolves disappeared in the Western region the project was abandoned, the wolves were trapped and moved down east.
Fast forward a few years and now coyote hunting is illegal in several counties in the east because of mistaken identity kills. Coyotes and Red Wolves interbreed wiping out genetic traces of pure Red Wolf, which is the last nail in the coffin for this species I believe. Of course we end up with a bigger, nastier coyote.
I hope our deer heard is adapting as well and like most of Western US guys, our game commision is made up of business men appointed via politics - whether they hunt or not.

Three times the hunters to get the same number of harvest. That means most are not successful. I bet when the numbers of harvested critters really start dropping I bet they blame hunters and not the wolves.
How ever protected does not mean bullet proof. Just look at humans. We are a protected species and there are still plenty of us getting shot. It is Saturday morning and how many were shot in Thunder Dome? I ment to say Chicago.
