Wolf Small Rifle Magnum Primers

They give me noteworthy reductions in SDs. I run them with extruded powders only since I had hang fires with some ball powders. They are a milder primer than most American brands, but that seems to work well with extruded powders.

I pair them with N135, XBR, and H322. Mostly 69gr and 77gr OTMs

The original Murom manufactured SRMs variously branded as PMC, Wolf, and Tula over the years were factory coded as KVB-5,56 and had the same mild explosive pellet as the standard and very soft cup SR version (KVB-223) with the bright copper colour cups. However, they were given a thicker/stronger cup to cope with 5.56 military ammo pressures making them a 'tough' but mild primer.

At some point, not long before Russian imports were banned on both sides of the Atlantic, a change was made to overcome complaints such as yours that they didn't work well with some ball powders even with the 223/5.56's relatively small charges. I lost track as to just what Murom changed and what it called its various revised models.

I'm still using up around 10K PMC brand SMKs that I bought over 20 years ago. As I worked part-time for the UK importer, I got them at cost price, a tiny fraction of what is being demanded for any Small Rifle cap these days. (If you can get them at all which is proving very hard indeed in the UK now.)

I'll second the observations above.
They work, but you have to be mindful of ball powders since they seem to want to hangfire on ones like CFE223, H335, etc.
They were popular in XTC while they were available since they tended to be cheap and performed well, but they have faded away after the importation bans.

I believe I have 1000 of the revised primers. Or at least that's what someone told me they were. I'll have to post a pic when I get home. But I think they were called .223 primers or something. They actually shot slightly better than the regular Wolf SRMs so I sidelined them for special loads that I'll likely never get to.

I sat out on the High Power range one year and did a primer comparison on like 5 or 6 small rifle primers in .223. Now this was a straight primer swap on the same load which isn't the perfect way to test a primer, but the Wolf was definitely the best in 100 meter group sizes when matched with H322.

I have yet to find a better primer for extruded powders in warmer temps than the Wolf Small Rifle Magnums, If the temps drop to 30-40 degrees F then a warmer primer is needed.
I Sure do miss the days when I was buying them for $100 or so per 5K.
Luckily, I stocked up. When I had the opportunity.

It might have been 'Small Rifle 223 Rem'. This is the European 'Murom' brand packaging. These appeared just before the ban kicked in, and I only managed to pick up 700 of them.
Those are them! My card stock slider it all red, but the name and primers are the same. I probably have 800-900 left out of my 1000 box.

I actually moved all my Wolf Primers into a Safe as they're almost priceless at this point. Bruno's shooter supply had a few thousand LARGE Rifle old stock pop up a few months ago, but I didn't get to buy any.

I never did get to try the Large Rifle.

SRM and Magnum's worked great for me when I mooched them off my mentor back when I began XTC competitions. Sadly no Joy in getting more these days although there was a place in FL not too long ago that had what appeared to be an updated box color pack that was the same graphics and font. 7 1/2 and 450's all the same for me to the Wolf.

I have about 3000 left. I bought several thousand for very cheap years ago was originally using them for AR plinking loads.
I loaded some in larger cases and got hang fires 2-3 per 100 as mentioned above.
Then tried some in my 6BRA and was surprised by the good crono numbers and groups they shot.
I originally looked at them as cheap plinker primers, not so much after testing them in BR class cases.
I think I payed $50 bux for 7-8 thousand at the time on sale. Cuda shoulda, woulda.

I also bought them thinking they'd make a great cheap pistol primer. The cups were too thick though. So after working with them in Rifle, I discovered that they were outstanding.

I remember getting them from Wideners for as low as $14.99 per 5000 before hazmat. I'm at about 20k remaining, and A buddy and I have shot probably 20k of them between us over the last decade.

I also had bad luck with them in Palma brass. Not enough umph. But that's ok. They are outstanding in their workable application.

Wideners is where mine came from also but the price was higher than yours when I bought mine. We’ll never see prices like that again. At the time I saw no need to stack them thinking they would be there when I needed more.
I was dumb.

Yeah. $14.99 was the cheapest I paid. I think it went up to $19-20 per 5k before they dried up.

One thing I've learned is that when you have half an idea that a reloading component is a good price, Buy TWICE as much as you think you should.

I've NEVER wished I didn't buy as much of any component as I did. Only the reverse.

Are the TulAmmo KVB-223 primers the same as the Wolf? I was offered 50K of them for $20/k about six years ago. I ended up buying 5K but have only shot a few hundred as they are very soft. I'm saving them for lower pressure 223 prairie dog loads.

I have some of the Wolf SR Magnum as well but have been shooting BR4 or 450 primers.

Who knows, maybe when this war is over, everyone will shake hands and we can get some primers flowing again

I bought 1k to sample, by the time I figured out they were as good as 71/2 so did everyone else and none to be had.
