Wolf primers

Any recommendations on which Wolf primer is the best choice for 6BR's with Varget powder?

I've always used CCIBR4's, price is going out of sight, know nothing about Wolf. Thanks.

I had such good luck with the Wolf SRM's a few years back, that I ordered 2 cases of them. Can't speak as to how the newer manufactured compare to those of a few years ago.

The current SRMs are good too. I don't load any 6BR, but we did a primer test with a .223, and the Wolf SRMs blew them all away... 5 shot groups with the same H322 load at 100 yards.

Wolf gave us 1/4" group, CCI 400s were next best at about 1/2", and ironically... the CCI BR primers were the worst at about 1".

I will put it this way, they fit tight, give great numbers and they less expensive. I would not consider using another primer. Same goes for the Tula.

Just make sure that you seat them good. It takes a little more force for the Wolf but they sure do shoot good.

Here's a very interesting article by German Salazar. Maybe it will give you some insight. It features Federal, Russian (PCM) or Wolf, CCI, Winchester, and Remington primer Studies. I use Wolf or Tula SRM primers exclusively in my BRX, and 223. When I get my new BR I'm not going to test anything else.

wolf small rifle mag!!! i have switched to them exclusively and use them in my 6BR with varget and 105 berger hunting vlds. shoots tiny little groups and does pretty darn good at 600 f-open (i am the limiting factor)

Wolf and Tula are the same primers, made in the same factory. The correct one for 6BR use is known variously as KVB556M, NCSRM or, as noted previously, just SRM. They are mild primers and very consistent with a hard cup. Pay close attention to seating.

Yeah... I had a round in .223 where I'd seated the primer a little deep. It didn't burn at all.

Also, the current SRMs don't like H335 powder at all. Hangfires, no fires, etc. But they work alright with other ball powders, and work great with extruded powders.

fd and guys,
I too have noticed that CCI primer costs are going through the roof. And I'm just about down to my last few boxes. Which is why I last picked up Federal Match Small Primers (at Brunos who still have a good price per thousand) that seem to perform very well in my 6mmbr. So just out of curiosity, I see Wolf/Tula Primers being being promoted with good results for some. Have any of you shot the Wolf/Tula vs the Federal Match just for comparison purposes? Just curious as I'm game for anything that might improve grouping or any components I use for reloading. Thx guys!

Alex

Since I think it's a related topic, another question. I'm experiencing my first examples of lose primer pockets with my 6BRX Lapua brass. One box of 20 has now been loaded 15x. For the last 2 loadings I noticed that I did not have the usual resistance when seating the BR4's. After todays firings I am now seeing a bright brass ring around the circumference of the fired primers. Other 6BRX Lapua brass with 12 or less firings have normal seating & no bright ring.

Are the 2 related: bright ring = lose primer pockets? :-\

As others have said, Wolf/Tula are the same product. KVB-223 is the standard charge, standard cup small rifle primer & may not be suitable for some shooters owing to the cup thickness. The KVB-223REM is the same charge but in a magnum-thickness cup & is all I'll use now for cost AND performance considerations. The KVB-556 is a true magnum charge in a magnum cup.

Yes. I saw the same indications with overpressure rounds in my 6BR Viper SS. It is a Drop Port, so no ejector. I assumed that pressure pushed a "dome" on the case head, angling outward the pocket sides and making the area around the pocket the primary contact point. Any other explanations would be welcome.

Do you mean KVB-223M? [br]
In any case, the Russian primers are so mild that the KVB-556M brisance is less than some standard American SR primers. My experience, after trying all of them is that the KVB-556M is the most reliable and consistent. YMMV

Steve: My thoughts also when I saw the ring. Brass is being pushed up and out of the primer pocket, then rubbing off onto the face of the bolt. Bolt face has been modified by Gre-Tan to stop primer blanking ( and it worked).

I've also had some hard bolt lift. Always used 33 grs. of Varget with the 107 SMK. I'll try backing off to 32.5.

It hurts to get such short brass life after all the work to form them. Guess I got spoiled with 40+ loadings on 6BR brass, & still going strong with tight primer pockets.

Yes I think that they related. The Tula SRM primers should help with that a lil, but how many firings wkth the Tula primers you get, not sure.
