Wolf Primers

Rick, I've tested both the small and large versions. They produce the lowest SD, lowest pressure and lowest velocity of any currently available primer. All of those are good characteristics, you don't want the primer being a major influence on velocity, they aren't made for that. I've also put away a good size stash of them.

Just out of curiosity, for those who have had success with the Wolf primers. I tested some with the same load that I use CCI BR2's. I did a comparison between 20 of each, only variable being the primer. I had a slightly larger ES and SD with the Wolf. So I am wondering if there is a trait that the Wolf stuff works better with,compressed charge? full case? Fast or slow powder? etc.) I'm using a 6.5x55 for long range in a modern action. Current powder charge is 47.6g H4831SC.

I think that they work better with cases that have a shorter powder column..

They produced lowest SD for me in both 6BR, .308 and 30-06. Be sure they are fully seated - if the firing pin has to finish the seating job it will decrease ballistic uniformity.

We use Wolf Small Rifle MAGNUM primers in our 6mmBR's with great results - very low ES and SD. The regular small rifle primers are way too soft and I am thinking of using them in my pistols.

We have a real "gun crank" that shoots 1000 yards with us and he also swears by Russian primers.

Yes, the Russian Small Rifle Magnum primers have a thicker cup,no other difference) and are the ones to use in the small size. In the large size, again, only the cup is different on the Magnum, but the standard cup is adequate for normal use.

i was just up at Hoovers and he told me he has all that is left in the US. He cleaned out all the wholesale outlets to dealers,and that is the last,no more ..........jim

I stocked up on about 20,000 of them a few months ago and haven't looked back since. The one thing I have noticed is that they seem to leave more crud in the primer pockets than another other primers I've used. Anyone else notice this?

I have noticed when I used my ultrasonic cleaner on my brass that the primer pockets come clean but there's a pinkish colored tint to the pockets afterward..Only with Wolf Primers.

For those interested in primer testing, take a look at article by German Salazar in June PRECISION SHOOTING, page 80. He ran tests on five different SR primers in a 6BR. Federal 205 Match beat the others in SD, ES and accuracy, but the PMC Russian was not far behind. The photos of flash column are pretty dramatic.

I just finished the companion article on large primers, it will probably be printed in three months. Those Federal 205M primers I used in the current article are 25 years old, the current ones weren't quite as good,not bad, just a bit worse).

Feedback we have received has been great. There has only been one negative comment and that was on the SR primers. We sold well over a million of the SR and one customer felt they were too soft for his application.
Wolf has added a new .223 primer to their offering. There should be more Wolf primers available in the country around June 18. SRM are still plentiful and a few LRM remain.

I used these LRM primers at a 1000yd shoot 2 wks. ago and my 5 shot group yielded less than 2" of vertical and my 10 shot group,all but one) yielded about 5" of vertical. I will shoot them again next match. Looks very promising. I bought the last 2000 my local store had in stock. I noticed when I decapped, that the cup and anvil came apart in two pieces with a lot of crud around them. I don't mind that as long as there are no ramifications.
