Wolf Match Target vs. Match Extra ???

I recently tested a number of 22 RF ammo makes both indoors and outdoors.

All testing was done with an Anschutz 1913 target rifle, a 36 power scope and off a fwd bench rest and rear bag at 50 yds.

Also chrono'ed the rounds while shooting.

The Wolf MT and ME were awfully close in accuracy to one another with ME edging the MT by a very small margin.

Neither will produce one hole groups at 50 yds but will make nice clover leaf groups under .5 inch.

In my rifle anyway, I would be hard pressed to see the benefit of any increased accuracy of the ME. That may just be my rifle though.

You won't go wrong with either one. Both are good rounds.

In our Annies the Wolf Target was splattered out pretty good 2 to 3 inches at 100 yards but the Extra would hold an inch easy and was universally more accurate.
The Match Extra is the same as the S&K Rifle match and the Target is the budget ammo S&K Standard Plus as seen in the link. The price is always the same too and is a giveaway to the marketing strategy.

Most likely the only difference is the batch number. They use testing to determine which box to put each batch in.

I recently read on RFC that MT is 1075fps and ME is 1035fps, but I have yet to confirm that. All of my .22's have preferred the ME over MT

I've shot a whole lot of both - a few cases, and given the performance difference I've seen I find that hard to believe. It's no secret that Eley classifies their green, black and red by test performance, but sometimes it can be hard to discern the difference between their 3 grades - not so with Wolf MT and ME. I'd like to add that I've experienced a fairly regular number of low shots (.5 inch or so) with wolf MT/SK S+ at 50 meters. I only use the stuff at 50 feet now.

I guess it don't matter now.

The place I buy my ammo from changed the price on the Match Target to the same price as Match Extra.

So I bought a couple more boxes of each and will try them with a tuner stuck on the barrel this time to see how things go.

I will try and explain but will assure you they are the same. But one is definatly better or more consistant than the other. Wolf And SK Jagd is the same ammo, it is made on the same machines in the same factory as Lapua Midas, Exacta, and Center X.

Know I have heard last winter the lots of SK standard Plus were running a little better than Match Target, which is the exact same ammo, only different in lot #'s.

With that said, according to Lapua rep's Wolf match Extra and SK rifle Match are also one in the same. They are lot #'s that did not make Midas. But be assured better on average than the lower priced Match Target or SK standard +. They are boxed one way or the other when needed to fill orders from SK or Wolf depending which one is being filled at the time.

I recently did an in depth test of Wolf Match target or "MT" and Wolf Match Extra "ME". When tested I used my Gorham built 40X. I have shot 20 shot groups with an old Lot of Eley BR Gold that group under .175" in perfect conditions! This test involved 3 different Lots of both types of ammo MT and ME. They were shot on cloudy evenings with the tempature around 55 deegres and no wind. The first thing I noticed shooting it out of the box without weighing it, it shot totally diferent, The MT had more flyers and would throw them farther than the ME flyers. The first test was on BR%) targets for score. There were 2 lots of ME that were great, they would not shoot a zero on an old BR50 target, and out of fifty shots, with one lot that only shot two zero's, The two best shot plenty of 100's and 50's with few 25's. The MT had one lot that threw several zeros but none way out, the other two would go out of the foul line. and all had several per box of MT.

Then I weighed each Lot, the best lot of MT was worse than the worst lot# of ME. This was obvious on paper also as I said. Then the two Best Lots of ME were very close the flyers were right beside the single raged whole was, and they were much fewer than with MT. the single best lot with the last 4 digits being (283 2) had 121 out 150 rounds that were exactly 55.8 grains, and 21 @ 55.75 to 55.6, with 8 rounds being heavier or lighter.

Next I shot the ME that weighed (21) between 55.75 and 55.6 for group, two ten shot groups at 50 yards, and both were right at .3" or just under, and not one flyer. This is the Lot that I ordered a Case of. I think the other best lot of ME was as good, I just flipped a coin after shooting both and this one won. None of the match target shot close even when I sorted The best lot weighed the same as ME, shot over .7" at 50 yards, and had 6shots in a group about .350" but the other 4 shot made that a .740" group, and that was worse than the worst group of ME unsorted.

I report on the last test when I shoot the 121 rounds out of the 150 I sorted out of my big stash of ME, but am sure it will shoot at least .3" and not display the flyers. But you can be assured if you want to shoot 50 or 100 yards with a gun capable of displaying true accuracy potential, The $13.00 more a brick for Match Extra is well worth the money, and you will find almost every time the lot you get of ME will be better than the best lot of MT. I would not benefit from shooting MT for practice, but will get real results practicing with ME. and I will take time to get a pic, of the sorted target with MT later. just for reference.

This is a fascinating post, as it assumes that overall cartridge weight is a controlling factor in group size (assuming no environmental factors). In many years of smallbore shooting, I have never heard of anyone sorting their ammo by weight, usually the only method given any credence was headspace.

Anyone out there heard of any such approach being applied by the AMU?

Also, a 20-shot group measuring 0.175 inches? Holy cow, that is incredible.

Like I said Dave the conditions were fantastic for the hole test!! No wind 55 degrees and overcast, don't get no better. And as far as just weight, I am as I said just into the test!! I have not even shot the best weight range YET. But as I said I will post those results when I get conditions good enough to eliminate the human factor!! I assure this is not a run out by two boxes of shells one each and tell the world which is best, all in one afternoon. I will tell it like it is, and these groups with wolf even at less than .350" are not nearly good enough to compete with the shooters that show up at the matches I shoot at. Any way as I said I'll shoot the best weight and then we'll see what difference head space makes if any as the Lot I went with is very very close with the Niel Jones Gauge from shell to shell!!I also assure I don't shoot those groups 5-10 mph winds and sunny with mirage, but I have shot benchrest for about 20 years now, since 1992. and since I detect some dought here are some of my test, Oh and at our range the actual distance is 52 yards!! this is Eley BR Gold(discontinued)!
